Just had the brake fluid changed on the 230SLK and the dealership have just rang me to say that the steering damper requires replacing (£101.32) and the "two belts" at the front of the engine require changing (£116.47).

Looking at the damper it looks simple to replace, but what about the belts are they easy to replace - do I assume one is for the alternator and one for the air- conditioning?

Thanks in advance

Thanks star, yes it's a compressor, are the belts tensioned by an automatic tensioner or is it a manual adjustment?

Automatic, just release and remove and fit new belt, then let the tensioner go and it self adjusts. easy.

Hi,
Sounds as if the steering damper price is a bit of a rip off as the one on my 202 was approx £20 from Euro car parts and is so easy to replace i would,nt think the 202 is that different to your slk.

Yes - I've been quoted approx £30 for the damper, so will change myself along with the belts :p

Change the damper yourself, 16mm or 17mm spanner/socket & 2 bolts - easy.
Belts are easy but you may struggle without correct tools. I think you need either 17mm socket or a T50/55 torx socket. You may need a longish lever bar as they are tensioned a lot. Have a good look first to decide on tools & have a go. Save yourself a few pennies.

Thanks type49 - can anyone confirm whether it's a 17mm socket or torx socket, thanks.
