Thanks, turbopete. Why would you not buy from a franchised dealer - price? We've found that most of our local dealers aren't interested in negotiating. Do you tend to buy from independent dealers or privately? We used to buy privately, but you hear so many stories of scammers etc that it's put us off, plus there doesn't seem to be much in the way of private sales in my area these days.

The 1.6 Fiesta wasn't an EcoBoost, only the 1.0. In fact, the 1.6 was a powershift model and it there seems to be a lot of problems with this over a number of years. I think it may have been resolved now to some extent.

Wow ... a year is a long time for a car to sit in showroom, but you seem to have got a good deal.

yes exactly that. price. usually a Ford (for example) from a Ford dealer has been a good chunk more expensive (even as a deal, not just the ticket price) than buying from a non Ford dealer or even a generic used car dealer. however with this car, the prices were so close it really made no difference either way. I only stayed with the diesel as the tax was a ridiculous price for the equivalent sized petrol engine and, whilst my mileage is relatively modest, I don't have any issues with DPFs blocking (mainly because the system uses a fuel vapouriser to heat up the exhaust to burn off the soot from the DPF, rather than the types that rely on the fluid (eloys? not adblue) and exhaust heat from the engine alone to burn off the soot.

Thanks, turbopete. We've struggled to find a good non franchised/generic dealer locally who have a good stock, but will keep looking.

Do the newer diesel MB's still use DPF's, and if so, from when?

The Euro 6 cars have Adblue so you have a separate tank where the spare wheel went, not sure if they still have DPF as well.

The DPF on my car (C350CDi) self regenerates when needed

Thanks, JBell. I'd never heard of Adblue so looked it up - clever idea! I get the impression from the little I've read that the DPF might be alive and well in new Mercedes, but could be wrong.

I've found a local-ish non franchised dealer with 3 or 4 Fiesta's in stock - all are way above the prices quoted in Parkers and one or two internet sites, but there or thereabouts using the Auto Trader online valuation tool

Clio .....Don't be afraid to make an offer they can only say no ...Nothing ventured nothing gained, I view the advertised /windscreen price as a guideline of what they would like for a car usually priced higher for negotiation purpose.

Thanks, Tony MB. I must admit that I find negotiation/haggling extremely difficult, but I'll give it a go!

If you don't feel embarrassed by the offer then its not low enough.:)
The worst that can happen is they say no. At that point ask them for a counter offer and go from there.

Thanks, LostKiwi (I think ;) ). I'll give it a go!

Do you (or anyone else) have any recommendations on good valuations magazines / websites? I've looked at Parkers and they seem quite low compared to the Auto Trader valuations which are more on par with the prices we've seen in dealers.

When buying quote the Parkers prices . When selling quote the AT ones ;)

Haggling for a car is difficult, you just have to steal yourself and put your best foot forward. You go in and say you like the car, but your budget is x amount. If you can find a similar car in Parkers then take the mag with you, tell them your in the market, your a buyer and may just as easily buy the one in the mag, can you do anything with the price?

At the end of the day they want a sale, and you want a car.

Somewhere in the middle is a deal.

Practice on your partner.

Good luck.

Yep that's about it. A fair deal to both is near enough. Haggling to the Nth degree as a skill is somewhat over rated as you will never buy something at less than the seller is willing to sell for... and if you get something for way under what you'd expected you'll usually soon find out why.

Well, we girded our loins and headed off to a dealer yesterday for a practice run ... and failed miserably :(

We were told that the prices were set by the head office and adjusted according to other vehicles of the make, model etc within 40 miles and that no-one, including the manager, can negotiate the price. Begs the question of why they have sales staff?!

We quoted Parkers etc and the best we got was that we wouldn't be charged any admin fees (yet another of the many fees chargeable these days).

We're going to find another car at another dealer and try again. Watch this space! ;)

What a load of codswallop...I've never heard of salesman let alone a manager who can't negotiate he's probably thinking of commission/bonus if they can negotiate admin fees they can do it with sales price(Admin for putting money in there bank?)....never mind upwards and on wards. I've done plenty of negotiation for car sales even once in America and again in Spain, often to the embarrassment of my family.

The best time to buy a car from any dealer is the last weekend of the month that's when they are desperate to hit targets, go in early you have very little chance of a deal go in late and they fall over you.

Also if you have a bank loan you don't pay admin charges and your repayments stay the same throughout the period, unlike a car loan through the dealer who charge you admin charge you more for your first and last payment, even dick Turpin worn a mask .

I got this response a couple of years ago from a MB dealership. I said I thought their used cars were over priced. They reassured me that they were professionals.

I asked them if they had sold me a car. They didn't get the point. I walked away,

Alex.
