Dear All,

My Vito has just started blowing through the middle silencer. I knew it was a waste of time but asked the main dealer how much and then came over all faint.

Internet searching reveals there are several aftermarket exhaust makes at approximately 25% of the price of the Mercedes real thing (assuming Mercedes make their own?).
Does anyone have an opinion on which brands are better than others?

I don't want a noisy performance exhaust (van's are noisy enough as it is), just a quiet silencer that'll last more than five minutes.

Bosal and Klarius crop up a lot?

Thanks

Ebay and sellers such as Gerlach.
Probably between £50 - 90 maximum.

I have just fitted a back box to my 97 w210 300td ,all in £75 to my door and it had all new mounting kit consisting of both the bolt on rubber mountings and the two rear box rubbers.

Klarius are cr@p. they never fit right, or at least ive never fitted one that didnt need some regigging on hangers etc to get a decent fit (not banging on anything or hanging too low, or BOTH)

Bosal are usually a reasonable fit. OEM ones will be pretty much perfect, but ive had better experiences fitting Bosal than the Klarius ones

Found Gerlach on ebay at £53 delivered from Germany!
Arrived in a massive cardboard box with rubbers and clamps.

Fitted it today and back to standard noise levels.
(Didn't need to bash anything around to fit.)

Oh, and it comes with a 30 month warranty (not sure how that's going to work in practice)!

Since a few people have mentioned Klarius exhausts, I thought I would give my experience. Which is, sorry to say, not very positive. Which is unfortunate since it is a UK product and I'd like to support UK manufacturing.

I had one fitted to my wife's Ford. Right out of the box the silencer was considerably noiser than the stock exhaust. Now exactly 2 1/2 years later the silencer has a developed split along the seam and there is a hole larger than a £1 coin. I've never seen a silencer in this sort of condition after 2.5 years. It looks more like one that has been on the car for seven years.

According to ECP, the unit comes with an "industry leading 3-year warranty" with no restrictions.

But surf on over to the Klarius site where you will learn that the 3-year warranty applies if the work was done by a Klarius accredited tech. (who bothers to get certification from every exahust system manufacturer?)

Also, I checked their warranty returns page on their website. Clicking the link brings up following:

"ACCOUNT SUSPENDED -- This Account has been suspended. -- Contact your hosting provider for more information. (see image)"

Which sort of gives you the feeling they are not too interested in providing warranty service.
In any case I am contacting ECP and the manufacturer to see if there is any chance of getting a replacement.

I’ve seen a 9 year old resurrection once, I’m sure the mods will remember if there is worse!
Oh yes, we did lock a lot of the old threads a good while ago but still some old ones come to life again.

What’s worse? Resurrection of an old thread or 150 asking the same thing?

Doesn't the life of an exhaust depend on a few factors, like if its diesel it seems to last forever as the inside gets a nice protective coating of soot, or at least it did pre dpf..
A petrol may depend on car usage? Seen many with water pouring out so short journeys may fill it up somewhat, leading to premature corrosion.
None of these steel exhausts seem to last as long as oem though, but why?

Short journeys kill cars, condensation sitting in the exhaust will rot it out in no time.

Yep. The NO2 in the exhaust gases dissolves in any condensation present to form nitric acid. This rots exhausts from the inside.

Just been reading about the issues with NOx. Apparently NO2 in the upper atmosphere is almost 300 times worse than CO2 as a greenhouse gas and takes significantly longer to break down. Additionally it behaves as a catalyst to break down ozone high in the atmospere.
Nasty stuff.....

I used to have a mk2 Daimler. Needed a new exhaust. (about 15 yrs ago)
Rang jag dealer who could supply one but recommended a full falcon stainless system.
Was a whole £250 with a 25 yr guarantee.
