Hi people new merc owner here

I have a 2014 E class estate I have been pondering with the idea too upgrade the headlights to the led style ones as I think the look alot better.

I do not have the funds to buy a genuine new set from mercedes.

I have found this set in China.
Just found this amazing item on AliExpress. Check it out!

Hi hmch, welcome to the forum.

Well... from experience of these things (!), I advise doing some serious homework & ask around here before you commit £££.

I have a W220 S Class with OE HID headlamps and (on another forum) owners are often tempted by similar cheap chineseum LED 'upgrades' but invariably disappointed & frustrated when they fit them. Yes, they look good in the adverts, but can be a nightmare when you come to fit them. From memory also: if any of the (lower quality than OE) LEDS fail, the entire multi function headlamp / sidelamp / foglamp / indicator lamp etc assembly is likely to be Kaput.

E.g. often no, or a technically inadequate / mis-matched ballast resistor due to their much lower LED power consumption compared with halogen or HID bulbs, so the car's ECU senses a fault and any or all of they don't work, flicker, you get 'Bulb failure Warnings' + potentially much more complicated issues including beam throw & focus / 'dazzle' etc which can be an issue on an MOT test.

Sorry to appear negative about the Ali Express LED units, but in other words: If it's too good to be true ££, it probably isn't! That said, I defer to anyone here who has successfully swapped over to chineseum LED units without any problems.;)

If.. (?) you're considering upgrading because your current h/l lenses are simply faded / yellowed / cloudy etc & looking cosmetically unsightly: a professional polish or replacement acrylic lenses might.. make them crystal clear again & at least cosmetically 'presentable' for a fraction of the cost of replacing them- and with minimum hassle.

Hope this helps & good luck!

MB

Hi Mark thanks for the response

My headlights are in great condition I prefer the led headlights I think my halogen ones date the car.

I have been researching the oem headlights upgrade however put off by the reprogramming that needs to be done also I've read alot of people complaining about the led strip failing.

Saying that are the oem headlights repairable?

I understand the oem ones cost thousands aswell ?

Hi hmch, glad to help if I can.

Re. your OEM (halogens), yes, OEM upgrades to HID / Bi-xenon on W220s cost about £600 each - probably similar £ for your car if.. they are available. And again, probably some mods needed to the circuitry. Dunno...

You can now get plug-in LED replacement bulbs from Halfords etc - better light output but of course they wouldn't look much different to the existing halogens if you want a more stylish look!

Not sure how to advise you apart than that, maybe others here will have some ideas?

Let us know how you get on.

Not helpful to your particular issue but, my CLS has full led headlights from the factory and they are amazing.
Has the ILS system and auto full beam.

If you can get that aftermarket, well worth it.

My headlights are my favourite thing about my car.

Plug in LED replacement bulbs are illegal and violate the certificate of conformity and type approval.

To be legal any lighting system must be fully E-Marked. That includes the bulb and it's housing.

There are no E-Marked plug in LED bulb replacements as LED bulbs cannot meet the regulations.

Any replacement housing (such as those from AliExpress also must be E-Marked to be legal.

E-marks can be found on the lens of the housing.
