hi little help in the sussing this fault , 2002 c220 cdi w203, last year was very cold has esi and battery ,gear faults ,charged battery larger than normal size so plenty power , the car eventually settled and all was fine till 3/4 months ago eis checked ,new key and link ,by pass or whatever it is called put in on steering lock, all well and driving great , till todays loss of gears . now usually in this situation key would not turn but because of afore mentioned bypass the car key will start the engine , but only had 1 st and reverse . aa out and read out wsa this,

attend to loss of gears, found stuck in 1st, rac scanned and multiple tcm faults. suspect ecu fault. clearedcodes and followed to members place of repair. member was hit while awaiting.

gearbox electroplate failing likely gets you all this fun - although it does appear if the battery voltage is high it copes less badly and it can seem to get over itself... (I guess at startup it throws teddies)

Try std batt. I had a nu of dramas after putting over specc batt on my w208 incl blown maf also has oil got in trans harness up to trans ecm? I think in ps footwell? That causes, all sorts of dramas.
After that I think fd electroplate, a possibility.

thanks for the input , as it is the same time of year as last malfunction ,and undervoltage i swapped batteries , and reinstated the emulater on the eis lock, so at least i could start the car and turn the steering, as it was due for a box oil change i decided to check out the tcm and electoplug on the box , (stands back and swears) yep oil the plug wicked oil and luckily tcm did not get completely soaked .any how cleaned out i/2 litre of oil ,replace the gearbox plug seals cleaned the loom and checked gear lever and connections on eis .cleared the faults , some history failed but thats empty aircon and heater relay run on ,not important. any how three weeks later still on the button running sweet easier start up and 52 mpg plus and not effected by the cold snap , it all seemed to star with the key not turning in the eis . hope this little episode helps some members, regards to all have a good christmas

not sure I get the stay away message -

all brands of cars have followed the mercedes development since 1995, with design to fail - its gone through phases - where merc damaged its reputation with the 220 and had to wind back the time to death across the board - then had a better idea and joined forces with the USA and cross pollinated the genetic illness to many other brands - whilst locally the Germans all loved it - with BM, VAG and Merc now only peddling a 3 year cycle to the trash can

the only one's that aren't utter criminals is toyota - with Mazda and Honda trying hard to stay afloat vs business models that is just marketing crap to fools

Yep, MB, VAG, BMW is the most common stuff on the road and even on used adverts by some margin!

As the business circles say, you can sell anything to idiots.
