Excellent job, well done you get the bravery medal no problem.
Very satisfying result and a feeling of accomplishment, not to mention contentment.
Everything looks in top condition and fit for many, many more miles which just goes to prove what we've been saying, that on here you only hear of the failures and catastrophes.
Now I'll have to get round to buying a gasket and doing the same. I would be more than satisfied if I have the same result because with the miles I do, It will be me that needs spare parts before the engine.
Again, well done and many miles of happy motoring.
Cheers buddy , I used an Elring gasket from eBay which cost £27.00 . MB was working out £40-50 but none of the dealers had 4 spark plug recess gaskets in stock . I believe that MB use Elring gaskets anyway but don't quote me on that .

Good to know.
Here in France I can get the Elring set for €23 from an internet parts supplier so when I've time (excuse No.1) I'll get it done.

If you want I could send you the lucky underpants I wore that day

Brilliant, that's a real sign of M-BO's solidarity! Still laughing at that!
Just with Exit coming up I wouldn't want to deprive you of them if they got stuck in customs.
Thanks again.

Right it's back again after two weeks.
It's happened twice in the last two days on start up. No difference in performance, MPG, etc.
Am I right in thinking this camshaft position sensor is only used on start up, if so this would this point to it being the faulty unit.
I've only a basic Autel scanner so I'm thinking of changing it as it's easy and at €40 worth a punt.
What's the consensus.

Is this a normally aspirated C180? If so I think it's the M111 not the M271. A VIN decode will soon tell.

And another thing!
Parking up last night 3 malfunction warnings all related to the LHS light cluster (main, dipped and indicator). Checked this morning all fine, connector perfect all working as normal.
Beginning to suspect a battery on the way out it's an MB item and I can't find a date on it. It can't be the original after 14 years and I can't see the last owner spending money on one so possibly 8 years old.
Anyway must check it out it this gale ever dies down.

Thanks, Don't know I'll take a look if this wind ever abates.
It's so bad I don't want to open the bonnet in case it folds over the roof!

More checking, no sign of any date on the battery although all voltages check out.
Checking the cam position sensor the 12v battery and earth are there at the connector and the sig wire is showing 10v although I thought it would be a 5v reference no mention of voltage on the wiring diagram. I didn't back probe it just measured at the plug disconnected and ignition on, engine off.
Car still running well but looks like I'll have to get a sensor as that's were the code is pointing other than wait until it fails completely and the car doesn't start!
Anyone any info on the sig voltage to the sensor?

For testing the sensor remove it and back probe the centre wire (which is actually 10.8V) with the ignition on connecting a volt meter to earth. Bring a metal spanner close to the sensor and the voltage should drop to near zero if it's working.
Couldn't find a failure but it's an intermittent fault so I've found a Bosch one for €30 so I'll change it and see if that cures it.

So got time to fit the new sensor but on realising there are two sensors one for each cam found the exhaust one (thanks to Uncle Benz) was contaminated by oil in the electrical connector just another sign of oil still working it way out of the harness after the famous cam magnet problems.
So did the usual contact cleaner and compressed air and will now wait before fitting to see if it clears,

Further code showed up again today after the second start, on checking more oil in the connector for the exhaust cam sensor, so cleaned it out again but still haven't fitted the new one as both are still testing OK.
Now I have the cat, O2, heater showing NIC on the reader which I think is more oil in the after cat O2 sensor but not showing the usual code yet.
Now a question.
After I reset the code and cleaned the cam connector the engine won't rev above 4K in park, is this normal because I never tried this before?
On the road it will rev right out no hesitation and full power even bringing the traction control on in the dry. MPG everything as should be.
Just we are going away for a few days at the end of the month in the car and I'm getting a bit of grief about MY CAR never working when it's needed!
Oh, another question is cam sensor B the exhaust sensor?

Not reving over 4K in park is normal - MB set it that way
