Air con not working

I have a 280te W124 series year 1993.The air con runs R134a gas.The heater fan works and the temp changes from hot to cold however the three square buttons that control the air con between the fan and temp round switches do not work hence the compressor is not working and no air con.Anybody got any ideas.

Most common fault is running out of Freon gas, the chilling agent around £75-£90 to top it up. when they went to top mine up they found the condenser was damaged. No charge for telling me this, but obviously the wanted the business for replacing the condenser
