Air-con on my 190e not working - help!

Ive only had it 2 weeks, so I'm a bit green on the 190e.

Car has only done 45k, and is in really nice condition. Has air-con, but sadly doesnt blow any cold air. I went down to Halfords in Byfleet, and they looked at it for free, manager nice and helpful! He reckoned pressure was right, and didn't need re-gassing, but not a hint of cold air. When I push slider to the right, I can hear a pump or engine note change. Any ideas, all suggestions welcome!

How did they check the pressure? To do this they must of put on some sort of gauges? Do you get air flow through the vents? Hot or cold? Does the compressor clutch cut in and stay running or keep cutting in and out? If you stand at front of your car looking at engine a/c compressor is on the right hand side at the bottom corner below the pas pump and does run off the drive belt.
