The air con on my 98 E240 has packed up!! I remember someone saying that it is either the gas or a "common fault" which required something being changed. Can anyone give me some more info on this and approx costs for repair??
Recharging the Aircon isnt very expensive. Depending on the work needed it would work out to be approx £30 to £60 pounds.
Mine has just had a full refill of the older gas which is more expensive. Included was a top up of lube in the system and also a guarantee that a refill would be FOC in the event of a fault being missed after repairs had been completed. I have used the same aircon fitter for all the cars I have owned and found someone reliable.
Also remember that if the gas level drops to a specific level the aircon system will not run to stop any risk of damage to the compressor. Your problem may not be a problem but a simple need for a top up.
Hello. I know this thread is from a while ago, but I searched for posts about air conditioning and here I am, so I suppose this is the best place to post my question.
I had my service at the mercedes garage yesterday and it hasn't gone so well this time.
But I'll stick to the air con problem that they mentioned.
I can't remember what the part was called, but I was told there were signs of an air con leak. But they didn't actually find out exactly because it would have taken some time to look properly and the bill was already quite large and the part they mentioned 'might' need replacing was apparently around the 800 pound area. I suppose it's a main component of the air conditioning system at that price. Could anyone tell me what this expensive part may be called and if I could get one at a better price, or any other air con advice.
I know it's not clear what I'm talking about, but when is it ever between car people and non-car people.
Thanks.
Patent condensers are in the main under a £100 and a doddle to fit on the V6 petrols (DIY at home job with basic tools)...the two hoses at the bottom of the condenser are the only connections and also a weak point (after years of deterioration) and readily available from main dealers.....
Get it checked again with someone who can point out exactly where the leak is coming from as it will be obvious then let us know....
You should be able to find a local aircon specialist in your area and they are often mobile so will come to you.
They will normally pressurise the system with compressed gas and leave it for a little while to see if it looses pressure. If there is a large leak you will often hear this, small leaks will show up as a pressure loss. If no leak then they will evacuate the system and refill.
If there has been a leak make sure the dryer is replaced.
