My Merc Dealer reckons that the blur that is my vibrating air filter box on my 18 month old E270cdi is caused by mounting rubbers and bushes holding the base of the box in place that have softened. They are going to replace them next week. I'm not conviced myself. Has anyone else had this problem? The car has only done 14000 miles.

Why had they softened? Wrong spec? Manufacturing fault? Bad design? Contamination?

Don't know why but I'll ask them when they do the job and report back

tech said something about oil contamination, though that didn't quite ring right as the car had only had its first service a month or so before. In any case, they replaced the mountings and its all quiet again. I suspect its probably just poor materials not up to the job or perhaps, given that yours and mine are the same age, a dodgy batch. They also replaced the plastic horn mounting bracket with a metal one, so the horn doesn't rattle now either. Continuous development I guess.

The air filter was a good one, sounded like a B52 on take off ,but I only noticed it when standing outside watching the wife backing out. Couldn't hear it from the inside. I wedged a rag between the box and the engine block which kept it quiet until the dealer could get to it.

Mine has just had its first service too. Funny, but I took it back because of the noise and they repaced the inlet manifold to the air filter and said it had made a "definite improvement." Sounds like they might have diagnosed the fault correctly this time. The car goes in on Tuesday so I'll let you know what happens.
