I have seen some adverts for a minor cost mod that can give between 5-25 bhp, added torque and some better mpg.

The mod says: "The module modifies any standard ECU by telling the ECU that the incoming air in the intake system is cold and so advances the ignition to compensate producing more power. In many cases fuel economy is increased too. Power is increased by 5-20 BHP and torque is increased significantly"

Does anyone have any thoughts on this ?

The cost for the mod is GBP 5.00 !!!!

My first thoughts on this, is if the Engine Control Unit is receiving cold air signals the the following would happen;- Engine idle speed would increase slightly leading to lumpy transmission shifts and the engine would receive more fuel - as per normal cold start. So I cant see their point, especially with the saving on fuel bit.

The mod will just be a resistor that costs 10p. It would be plugged in line from the coolant temp. sensor. Don't bother. 20 year old fuel injection systems "could" benifit from this but not on modern engines. Also, by injecting more fuel because it thinks it's cold, is in no way going to improve on fuel consumption. Millions are spent on designing & improving engines NOT for a 10p resistor to make amazing differences without side effects.

actually I get 6 for 1p, so thats even cheaper, as you say it connects in series with the air temp or engine temp sensor so that the the ECU thinks that it is still cold, the value of the resistor is 4.7k the value of the average sensor when cold.
So it does use more petrol.

6 for 1p & then sell them for £5! I wish I could make a 3000% profit.

I do not want any more money, it just goes into the pile and sits there.:(

I'm not bothered about fuel, apart from the enviroment issue, as my company pays for all petrol used, I'd like a little more torque as I think the 230 is slightly under powered (compared to the 430 !)

I tried a switchable version on my SL320 that only came in with kick down, possibly more power, very debatable
