Hi,
I have a 1996 C180. The engine had a pinging coming from the engine so i replaced the Air MAss Sensor. it soted the problem and ran ok for a bit. now i am having these problems.
The Carb Spit on 1st start till its warm.
When its warm and i sit and rev it only gets to 4000rpms and then just stays there . i get the feelin of loss of power when driving and if i swtch off and let cool for a bit then start to drive again when at the lights or stopping the revs will dip to nearly stalling point then jump to over 1000 then back down. will do this for a bit then go stable.
I dont want to have to pay a frotune to diagnose the problem. please can anyone help............
Can it be a faulty air mass sensor. or something else.

well the carb spitting is the ign timming out, firing before the valve has closed, it will only rev to 4000 unless its in drive! and sounds like you got an air-leak on the inlet side!!

2 things first the car will not rev more than 4k rpm in neutral

If the MAF that you bought was a cheap one from Ebay and not a Bosch,,then it could be that again

Thank you for the welcome.
Yeah i was advised to get the proper unit though i did go cheap :-(
So you think it could be that that is my problem and nothin else like carb or fuel somehow.

sorry i am quite new to this.

I had one of the later carburated 190s - first registered Nov 1989. Much under-rated - went extremely well - kept it 9 years, no faults.

Well, not strictly true, the battery failed when it was 9 years old - so I took it back and complained!

I suspect the carb had to go when catalytic converters arrived?

change the airmass to a bosch one. bakiring or struggling to rev is a sign.
And the car will not rev past 4k in neutral as the fuel cut off will jump in .In gear you can happilly rev to the red line ( not advised)

Think it still points to the MAF,,the bosch ones are the only ones that last

I tried 2 £40ish MAF;s from German Swedish n French and both was worse than my original !! They refunded me me on both and I bought a Bosch unit for £142 delivered from www.airmassmeters.com and what a difference!!

The 1992 190E still got distributor cables and no MAF as I can remember. It an injection and remember there is a switch between leaded and unleaded.

When I saw the E280 Auto-car, shocked it got M111 similar to my W202. Mixed and matched in different models when parts available. At least my W202 still running and immaculate under the bonnet. Would nice to put it in the garage. Feel very sad to leave it in the frost night after night all because I got only one garage for my slk.
