I have searched the forum but I didn't find any other threads about it. I am sure I cannot be the only one annoyed by this. I have a W176 A180CDI and my previous W169 did the same thing. If I turn on the recycle button to prevent diesel fumes etc. from entering the car, then before I know it, it's turned itself off again. This is seriously annoying. The manual says it will stay on for only 5 min below 5 degrees C and 30 min above that. But it does whatever the hell it wants. Sometimes it feels likes it's on only for like 3 minutes and other times (rarely) it will stay on for a decent period. I also noticed it will stay on longer if the ac is on. Is there any way to set it?

I have a vague recollection about part of this being normal behavior.

If the aircon is off, then moisture is not condensed from the cabin air, thereby causing a possible issue with window misting. The re-circulation is thus designed to time out.

If the aircon is on, then the re-circulation can stay on indefinitely unless the sunroof or a window is opened, whereby it switches off again.

This may apply to some cars only (I think it did to my SL).

To preserve the system and its seals. It should be on all the time for that reason and turning it off can lead to costly repairs

...and also to keep the air conditioned surprisingly, just as important in winter to dry the air which makes it feel warmer as well as keeping your windows clear.

So you're saying I must turn the ac and the heater on at the same time? I don't have climate control btw.

Ok, I will leave the ac on and see what happens. I am still learning here so won't leavin the ac on increase fuel consumption? Also I presume leaving it on then the temp control will actually keep the temperature at the level indicated eg. 25 like climate control?

Should work like that but you will still have to juggle the fan and direction yourself, climate does all that for you ie if it thinks you need more air on the windows for demisting or a boost from the fan to get things moving etc etc

Shouldn't make much noticable difference to your mpg and the tiny amount it does, if any, would be more than offset by any repairs/recharging you need due to lack of use along with making the car a more pleasant place to be.

Sorry about the language problem: should have been :

"Air-recirculation mode deactivates automatically:
  • after approximately five minutes at outside temperatures below approx. 5
    corposwgl_2020.png
  • after approximately five minutes if cooling with air dehumidification is deactivated
  • after approximately 30 minutes at outside temperatures above around 5 °C"
