Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can help me. I have insured my 2001 230clk Kompressor avantegard with Direct Line and they require some sort of proof that the car has an alarm and immobiliser fitted. Does anyone know how I would go about proving that as the car has them factory fitted?

Regards,

Andrew.

PS I am not getting alot of work done due to the fascinating forum this is!!!

Call them back and tell them to stop being so stupid. We get a few of these issues from time to time. Brainless insurance clerks who can't grasp the idea that they should, and do, already know exactly what the factory has installed on a UK spec car.
Just tell them that the security system is the standard factory fit one, installed on all Mercs of that era, and that as an insurance company they already know full well what it is.

Chances are the next clerk you will speak to will have a higher IQ (not too hard) and there wont be an issue.

The Mrs had 1/2 hour conversation with her insurer a few weeks back. She was collecting her new car from the dealer who had just called to confirm that they'd had the paperwork back for her registration transfer so her car was ready for collection. The clerk understood that we wanted to cover both cars for the afternoon but couldn't cope with the fact that they both had the same reg number.

It's not always the fault of the call centre operator - for that who you'll be talking to, not an insurance "specialist".
These people are employed to just punch numbers into the computer. If the "system" won't allow same number on two cars - then it's the system's fault - not the poor girl's, who is just trying to earn a crust.

If the alarm/immobiliser is a standard fitting by MB i shouldn't think you have to prove anything to D/Line,it should come up on their computer what is fitted to the car via the reg number, the only time you would probably have to prove it, is if it has had one fitted by someone other than MB.More than likely it will be D/Line with their wires crossed or someone not doing the job properly,an insurance company once wanted to charge me extra for having a personal reg number,(i had owned for 15 years),the explanation.....it made the vehicle worth more!,needless to say i asked to speak to a supervisor, refused to pay and was given lots of apologies,i won't say who the ins/com was but it was morethan enough to stop me using it again.

True Doug, but it isn't an unusual request and when we finally got the concept through to him and the penny finally dropped, there wasn't a problem. It wasn't the fact that he didn't have a way to do it - he did - but rather he couldn't grasp the concept of something that is extremely common in the UK these days.
I rang my insurer, gave them the same story and it was done in seconds. All down to who you get.

Try the thatcham web site:
http://www.thatcham.org/nvsr/index.jsp?page=200
or http://www.thatcham.org/myvehicle/.
Have a look around the site, I'm sure somewhere it stated what is actually fitted to each car as standard.
Doug

Thanks DougCLK320, had a look at the two sights suggested and strangely enough my car (2001 51 plate 230 CLK Avantgarde) is not on the lists. I wonder if Direct Line are also using this information source and hence the question of proof. My car has definitely got it as standard because it operated via the merc key fob......that is presuming that it is automatic with door locking!! Don’t really want to break into it to find out as you can imagine!!!!

Cheers to all of you for your help.

Regards,

Andrew

Hi,
Both my cars are insured by direct line, and they knew that both cars had security systems fitted from new.

Insurance

Hi,

Just had a conversation with direct line and apparently they will not cover the car for theft as it has not got a tracker fitted!!!!! I asked if getting one fitted would reduce my premiums and was told that it wouldnt. I will have a look at how much they cost but does anyone else know roughly what it is going to be?

Cheers,

Andrew

Insurance

Think I might...... I joined the Mercedes Benz Owners Club who were promising reduced rates on just about everything including insurance......I take it the cost of tracking is fairly high?

Andrew

I believe it's not just the cost on installation to consider, there is an annual fee of over a hundred pounds. I suppose any requirement may be based upon the "perceved risk" of where you live. However, I'm just outside the M25 and commute daily into London - yet I haven't (yet?) been asked about fitting a tracker.
Doug
PS Maybe I'm considered a low risk...because I'm so old !!!!!

You are possibly right Doug although I am no spring chicken. Mind you I have had a few claims.......but none for theft in all the time I have been driving (29 years legally). I live in Cheshire but at one time it did have a Liverpool post code. Thanks for the replies to my posts, this is the only forum I have joined and it is extremely helpful. Have a great day.;)

Regards,

Andrew.
