R230 SL500 - oh yeah!
Hi

Managed to get the wheel arch liner off to get at the alarm siren and thought I'd share what I found:

Here's the siren - looking pretty clean and tidy:

Used a hacksaw to open it up as nothing else seemed to work. So a few minutes with the saw and not so pretty inside:

I taped up the connector and put the case/holder back in the car. New siren ordered so hopefully that will get it all working properly again.

I had to buy a Torx security bit set and just for reference, it was the T40 bit that I needed to undo the Torx bolt.

Feel very productive! Let's hope the new one goes in OK and works.

Finally got round to fitting the new alarm siren this afternoon. Put a little switch/contact cleaner onto the plug before fitting the new one into place. Also have a bag of M8 bolts with 9 spares...

Works well, I now have 3 chirps when locking the car alongside the lights flashing and one chirp when unlocking, along with the flashing lights.

Quite pleased with myself (especially as it started raining quite hard in the middle of it all).

Found out that one of the emergency key elements doesn't actually work - won't lock or unlock anything - though.

3 of us, I replaced my siren this week on my CLK, there coded now for Belgium from factory but can be coded to other countries which removes the chirp.......

Opening the old one up and I think it'd been out for a while!

I wonder if your neighbours do too

The chirp is actually quite subtle - and not very loud. I doubt it can be heard very far away at all.

An old Saab I had 'chirped' 3 times on lock/unlock and it was the horn that did the chirping - that wasn't very subtle!

I'm very aware of opening my R Class's chiming tailgate in the early hours

When you get the smart top module fitted it gives you the option to have the chirp activated again....I didn't !

I spent a couple hours after removing the wheel well looking for the siren and never found it. I was close to removing the bumper, but that did not make sense. Where is the siren on a 2005 SL500? There was nothing even looking like it. My probvlem is the fog lights flash at random, but the siren is not working, I've read that the siren has bad internal batteries and needs replacing, which I have a replacement but can't find where it is mounted. Thanks to anyone that can shed some light

Hi
I've replied to your message. I can see that the pics are no longer visible so it may be harder to see what to do. But to answer your question - the siren is behind the wheel arch liner and is behind the wing, not the fog light (so at the back of the front wheel).

Once you get the liner off its fairly simple to see it, though you do need a bit of dexterity to get the bolts off to remove the siren.

Good luck.

Hi Can I ask which wheel arch is it behind-UK drivers or passenger side?
- is there a generic part or does it have to be Mercedes part?
does it need a garage to code it to my car?
Many thanks

The alarm is a MB part only and costs £100
Only one torx bolt to remove and its plug and play. No coding.
The new alarms also have an audible sound when locking.

Not sure which side on an SL. Its drivers side on a W211;)
