Not really anymore, the tolerances are far better than they were years ago and there isn't the losening up effect there was in cars from the 70-s to 90's. You should be at optimal economy within a thousand miles with a modern car.
Ok - was just going on my experience with my E350 where it just got better and better consumption wise over the years - best I ever had was just before I sold it around 65,000 miles. Perhaps I just drove it more carefully!

I used to be able to get to Spain in the 7g car but my new 9g has a smaller tank for some reason 50L and it will prob get me about 600 miles but I will just give it a splash at my overnight stop.
That is tiny, my W211 has a 80ltr tank, my W210, W213 and R172 all 60ltr although on a good day I can get 65ltrs in

No idea how big the 129 tank is. All I know is it can swallow £100 of petrol far too easily :(

Good question - cars will become gradually more economical as everything loosens up - to at least 20,000 miles.

I took a brand new E220 coupe to France last year, over 2000 miles of steady driving,I really struggled to get it past 40mpg,I figured it was due to it being fresh out the box and things needed to bed in.

Nope, that should happen within the first 1k.
