I've just sold my 2001 W210 E320CDi Avantgarde after 3 years and 64,000 miles of ownership, I thought it would be interesting to compare my running costs to those of Blobcat who came up with figure of 34.847 pence per mile over 109,500 miles in a period of 4 years and 4 months.

Although my analysis is not as comprehensive as that of Blobcat, here goes:

3 years depreciation £5,500
Purchased privately in May 2006: £8,750
Sold privately in May 2009: £3,250

3 years insurance Including Green flag cover £1,358
Year 1 £427
Year 2 £458
Year 3 £473

3 years tax £590

3 years MOT (No failures) £135

Tyres: 2 sets (Bridgestone) fitted at Kwikfit £936

Servicing costs at local Indie (3,000 miles to next "B") £1,110
A service inc full set of pads £245
B service inc brake fluid change and transmission fluid change £340
A service inc 4 KYB Gasadjust shock absorbers and front pads £515

Repair costs outside of services £1,255
Replace starting circuit solid state relay (Indie) £120
Replace brake light switch (Indie) £34
Replace gearbox speed sensor electronic plate (Indie) £338
Replace Bosch type 19 100 a/h Battery (Indie) £112
Replace bonnet star after vandalism:mad: (myself) £34
Replace 3 wiper blades (Myself) £67
Repaint bottom half to hide rust:Oops: (Local bodyshop) £550

Fuel costs assuming 38mpg @ £0.95 per litre=£7,358
64,000/38= 1684 gals X 4.6= 7,746 litres X £0.95= £7,358

Total cost of of 3 years and 64,000 miles ownership £18,242

This equates to £117 per week or 28.5 pence per mile

Yes it may be cheaper on public transport, but my 45 minute journey to work would take me almost 2 hours plus a 1 mile walk at each end, so I'm looking forward to picking up my next Merc, a 55 plate S350 at the end of next week.:D

Really excellent. Very competitive buying and selling costs are crucial. Really competitive servicing by the Indy, use of ASSYST to enable infrequent but appropriate servicing.

I think your tyre wear and fuel consumption are as per my S Class diesel, so you should achieve similar performance in the 350 (will use a bit more fuel, but otherwise comparable).

28.5 p overall is world class. I doubt if any of the vehicle leasing companies could come up with anything close, even for their highest mileage and most prudent drivers, and this is miles below the global cost per mile figures cited by the AA/RAC, What Car and all others.

You're not Scottish, by any chance? If not, I will talk to the Committee, I think honorary status will be a formality!

Blimey thats some accounting. My CL after some detailed accounting works out that most weeks it costs a wedge followed by another wedge and yet more wedges so in the last 4 years Ive spent about 100 wedges.....
