Alternator/Battery warning message

Hi,

I have a W203 C220CDi on a 2003 plate with 100k miles and have recently (Last Friday) had a new doofer (I think its called a clutch or frewheel or something like that) fitted to the end of the alternator because the old one had frozed and wouldnt rotate.

When I took the car home all was well but after three or four days of the car not moving I started it and a malfunction message came on saying battery/alternator take car to service station. The front lights flashed at the same time as I started the engine so I stopped, turned off and started again, this time all was well. Its happened twice since then, always during wet weather. Now all seems to be well.

Does anyone hav any idea what might be wrong. The Merc dealer who did the work asked me to book the car in but I'm reluctant incase the error has something to do with them and the new parts they fitted.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I would check the connections on the rear of the alternator first

Hi,

Many thanks for the fast response. Would the alternator have been taken off to do the kit?

I supected a bit of moisture / condensation somewhere that dries out but I'm not a mechanic and I'm clutching at straws.

Some take them of and others do not,,so no answer to that.

I would give it a few more days I think, yes a damp SAM could also do it

A sam is an electronic storage device,,when damp they can do funny things like turning on an odd lamp or forgetting that a charging system is on the car,,in other words maybe show silly faults that do not exist

the pulley change on this car is easily done insitu, i am sure they did it this way. it is possible that the current fault is in some way connected with the work they have done, but more likely not from what you have told us.

just keep playing malc, das is easy enough to find your way - have a look at das sim for other models. wis you already know. epc is easy after that russian site! and you will have star finder too? another useful utility. what about sd media? and TIPS?

I have the 2009 EPC installed here in the office, but the Russian EPC is so quick to use here for identifying parts.

Ese the other things are something new to me like star finder etc

The worst shock was when the 10,000 fault codes all came up from the past faults,, I think that I will erase them individually

I've had the alternator checked out by a bosch garage, all ok, SAM in Eastleigh has had a look at it to because the warnings keeps flashing up every time I start up,could not clear it, so have to live with it,
battery's ok. This all started after i had a check up at MB before I drove to Italy, it did clear, but came back when I drove to Lime Regis on a very wet and windy day, might try looking at the connectors one day.

Could be the voltage regulator on the back of the alterrnator, replaceable individually on bosch alternators. If its a valeo alternator there is a possibillity of the voltage jumping up to16-17 volts on start up, easy enough to check with a multimeter.
