Hi guys - hope you are all having a good christmas break. I wish my car would give me one.

I have noticed a sqeak / squeal coming from the pulley area of my car for the last few weeks and decided to drive it till something fell off. So, I drove the car on Xmas eve and first had a message about brake lining wear (they look ok to me and car was not long ago serviced). When I switched off the car had a red message saying 'alternator fault - visit workshop'. I was thinking the noise could be the alternator bearings or pulley. Any ideas?

Also I have looked at the russian site but cant see where the alternator is located.....presume behind the turbo pipework somewhere?

Could be the belt slipping, try spraying WD40 onto the belt with engine running if the noise goes then its most likely the belt. Will also be worse when first started as alternater under full load. I am presuming that the alternator is belt driven on this engine, if not please ignore this advice.

Hi

As stated above it is likely to be the free wheeling pulley on the alternator. They fail be starting to freewheel in both directions, best described as the sprocket on the rear whel of a bicycle. Picture what happens when it starts to slip.

Have a look at the pulley you should see some movement sort of end play when it squeaks and slips. It is a common enough problem and easy fixed without buying a new alternator.

Thanks for the replies - will order one from my local dealer and decide from there if I will do this myself..... Doesn't look too hard to get at and sick of going to the indie garage now. Equally fed up with visiting dealers for spares - should I bite the bullet and buy a new car I wonder?

A 'how to do it' would be great.... I had a look yestarday and it looks to me like the intercooler pipeork to turbo has to come off to adjust belt tension on the alternator?

Went to Merc to look at replacing this car - they offered £2k for mine against a 56 plated 320cdi estate with 58k on the clock for £19k - don't think so!
