I have been offered the chance to change my 1988 W124 260E (142K miles, Virtually FSH, Fair condition) for a 1981 AMG 500 SEL.
The 500 has 228K miles on the clock and is immaculate outside (it's just been completely resprayed) but is suffering with loose trim and the usual worn seats, but that all seems to be fixable...
The drive provided by the car is fantastic for something so big, and has a huge fun factor!!
Does anyone have any experience of these cars?  Are there any particular things I should look out for??

Andy,

Thanks for the reply, can I ask what the reasons are?

I've been told that the 5.0 16v engine is robust and reliable, but the 5.0 32v and 6.0 litre engines are prone to irritations (Such as head gaskets and rocker covers)...

Is there anything else??

Hi Rob,

I am not going to go into all the pros and cons. But the S class has done star ship miles. Its been resprayed so with 12months whatever is covered up will come back through. All trim will be expensive to replace.  The V8'S are great but will cost to sort problems out.

Stick with the 124 or even get a younger 124 or S class. But I am afraid you will be buying trouble on yourself.

Regards
