I've searched the forum but to no avail. I've also read the outstanding oil post.

For my 2019 4.0V8 TT do I use Mobil 1/Mercedes oil/or the Mercedes AMG oil?

All are spec 229.5, I normally use Mobil 1 0W40 so would lean that way, but wanted to know if the AMG oil had any special coating properties the others don't or if it's simply re-badged Castrol.

Of course I don’t think they make their own oil. I’m just unsure of who actually does. It’s probably oil from Asda.
My tuner who races and builds Subaru’s etc for over two decades says initial oil may be mineral as that was always the way, then I should use semi-synthetic before finally moving onto fully synthetic.
I’m trying to find out if Mercedes oil has any special braking-in properties or I’ll just bite the bullet and buy a decent semi this afternoon.
Mercedes are now the poorest dealer chain I’ve ever dealt with for aftercare. I’ve tried three separate dealerships and emailed two others asking what oils I need in the garage for top-ups and their lips are sealed.
Sale teams always answer funnily enough. Makes me sceptical about any warranty repairs I may need in the future.
Thanks for the link, Fuchs and Mobil 1 are on their approved list so I’m good to go:)

You might also like to consider Petronas oil, after all they are a principal sponsor of the F1 Mercedes team! It's what a local indie always uses.

Thanks for the info about petrol as.
Your car will probably have Petronas 229.5 oil in it from new, probably this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MB229-5-...109127&hash=item4b1eca3fd7:g:bEsAAOSwMLhdi0KA

If not it will be this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7L-Orig-...379436&hash=item2632bde0f9:g:BY4AAOSwp7tbRc4l

I thought there was supposed to be a 1 litre container in the boot as well with the car

I see the petronas is fully synthetic too. It must be that the engines these days are different to old, I was convinced the mineral oil aided bedding the piston rings in. As far as bike engines were concerned this was always the way.

Regarding bike engines that was always the way, but I am not so sure it is today.
Perhaps the higher revving engines has a bearing on this?

Mobil1 oil is marketed by Exxon Mobil
Which is part of the huge Esso group.

They do update them
Yeah understandably, I meant with regard to running-in and the process used as rule-of-thumb worldwide. I just wouldn't have thought I could just drive as normal (but held back a bit) without causing premature component damage/uneven wear.
I assumed the running-in process was a contributing factor to an individual engines compression and power made when tuned.
Hopefully the internals are as tough as superman and I won't cause any damage by using the wrong oil. A mate who had a scooby engine re-built by a well known subaru specialist gave same advice I've been given regarding oil during first 1500 miles.
I'll see what comes out in my oil.

Fwiw I put Mobil 1 0w40 in my C63 biturbo

If you are changing the oil youself there are two drain bungs. The dealers only ever seem to open one of them

Cheers for the info. Are the plugs magnetic, and do they require replacement each time?
I've already ordered the Mobil1 0W40 and I've used this previously on my other car so have almost four litres in the garage already.

I cant find a semi-synthetic on the market at 0W40 so I gave in.

The rear drain plug is a plastic affair. The front one is more conventional. 6mm allen key, copper washer. M177 takes 9 litres

I thought that was fairly standard advice on running a new engine in, my mate has an M4 and BMW recommend the same

Yeah same. Im fairly confident this approach improves longevity, if it doesn’t at least I’ll enjoy the maintenance and it can’t do any harm.
I’ve bought shell helix semi synthetic for my 600 mile oil change, and mobil1 for 1800 miles when I’ll change diff and gearbox oil too. The shell isn’t mb approved though so I’m biting my nails
:-/
If Mercedes had a less up-thier-one-arse approach they’d be getting paid to do this for me.

From Theron after it’ll be vroom vroom vroom........

The Shell Helix Ultra is MB spec! MB main dealer put it in my 63 (albeit they put the wrong one in first time and I made them change it, they put 5w40 in first), I was on a service plan and caught sight of the internal invoice 8.5 litres @ £9.00 a litre...
