Hello, does anyone happen to know an AMG specialist anywhere near Durham? particularly with expertise on 2000s models (ideally SL55AMG). The ignition key does nothing and the regular garage is stumped! They've probably thought about the batteries ;) Thank you

Hi, do you have a spare key and have you tried that ?..

When you say, “it does nothing” do you mean nothing, not even a click ?.
Is the car battery good, though presume that your local garage has tested that ?.

so could be the ignition switch, EIS..

not necessarily an AMG specialist but a good Mercedes indie should be able to help you out.. am sure someone will suggest a good guy for you.

Hello wearsafoxhat, thank you very much for taking the time to reply. the garage had checked the batteries and pretty sure more than one key. they have looked after the car before and very candidly said it needed a specialist (despite this meaning they won't get any work / cash). their guess was it was a computer issue (rather than a mechanical failure). you may be right that an independent mercedes specialist could resolve it, so we should broaden the request to an independent mercedes specialist near Durham, . thanks again!

First replace the batteries in your fob, although it sounds like they have done this, I would replace them anyway for a couple of quid its worth trying. I am afraid the fobs do fail from time to time. Has the car got keyless go ? On my 2004 SL55 it needs to recognse the key before it will start, it will flash up a warning if the key batteries are low. There used to be a chap on here who could fix the fobs, but he has passed away unfortunately. A new fob is £200 plus from MB, unfortunately. Total rip off. I think there is a company who can do it. It may be worth checking the battery connections in the fob.

I am sure there will be a good independent specialist near Durham, I am from down South, so hopefully someone will be along soon who knows your area,

Thank you Mark. it does not have keyless go. you are right about the MB fobs being a total rip off. They even supplied one where the slot-in metal key was completely the wrong shape right for lock (which wasn't discovered for some time as you don't use them until you need to, eg flat battery). Then MB said that it was 'out of warranty'. Thick as thieves.
