1992 W124 300 TE auto pre-facelift: 2000 W168 A Class 160
Hi, During my working life I had something like seven W124 estates, all no problem; at about 60-80k per year, I decided to relive my time and buy another and have just been duped into buying a 300TE that has a faulty Auto gearbox. Apart from many smaller issues (drivers seat and tools missing etc) I found after the drive home (40 odd miles) I go to turn around in the drive and am stuck in a corner - reverse wont run. I did check the Trans oil when first looking at the beast and it was clean and possibly a little over the top, but reading some of the posts her I think I have a "pig-in-a-poke".

So another few hundred quid on either a used job or a rebuild. What's out there now-a-days?. I am in North Dorset

Unsure of the meanings Blobcat above, although I am sure I was on these forums, or at least a MB owners club member in the past and did have a W123, 220, several W124 and finally a 210.

After an overnight the car engaged reverse, so obviously the hot Tx oil was something to do with the loss of reverse and yes the oil level is high. Perhaps the previous Owner added more than should have been allowed, thinking the loss of reverse was a level thing.
So I will ask the question is a high level contributory to the cause and would hot oil also add to the problem? The rad looks new; I have as yet to put the car on the fourposter and look at the cooling lines etc., so who knows?

You've posted in the "Introduce yourself" area - I was welcoming you to the forum.

I'd recommend picking one of the technical sections for your gearbox issue :)

Thank you, and thank you for the welcome. I have just realised I was reading your signature as against the thread post! I promise I'll catch up!

I have followed your advice and posted in classified (spares Wanted) and Technical, regarding the loss of reverse, now narrowed down to hot working engine as cold is OK????

These boxes often loose reverse as a first thing when they are worn out. When reverse does engage, can you gear rhythmic clicking as you reverse slowly? Tic tic tic tic tic?

The over full oil is not a major issue. When driving, how are the forward gears? Flaring at all etc?

Thank you for your interest.
Forward gear changes were fine, but after a few miles one could just notice the change with a little jump, nothing untoward.
Reverse; I cant say I noticed the ticking but there again I was just tuning the car around in the yard.
