So, any advice on what to look for? I am aware of problems with the timing gear on some engines but if the car has done 65000 miles is it likely to be ok? Also rust in the rear arches and damp in the boot. Anything else to be aware of on these cars?

It’s better than the alternative… ;)

It sounds like you have the usual issues at hand Michael. Best bet is to go and few as many as you can and compare the way they drive, not all R230's are equal. If it was me, a good option list on a sl350 is something to be looking for.
Mileage and service means nothing as far as I'm concerned. Colour is another draw factor too especially if it is blue ;)

Get one with decent sized wheels, my father keeps getting bogged down in the gravel around his house… he needs a 4x4 version…

Colour is nice on the blue one, mileage is low, so that might explain the relatively strong price. Definitely worth a view, not sure about the V12 badges on the floor mats (it's a V6). I like it, its a lot of car for the money. Check the service history, check the roof works properly, bodywork looks straight from the photos, I think you may have found a good one. Worth a view IMHO. Check MOT history.

Hi Mark
Good spot on the mats, I hadn’t noticed. The mot history looks ok, tyres advisory in 2010 at 21000 miles, front wheel bearings and front brake pad advisory in 2011 at 27000 miles. No advisories since then although it looks like it didn’t get mot’d in 2017 and the current one runs out in August this year.

Another question for you all. How accurate is autotrader price guide? It has the blue car at £9170 private or £10130 to £11200 dealer. That is for a car in ‘good’ condition. Hopefully the car is better than ‘good’ so might be worth £10000? What do you guys think?

So, as an update, I looked at a black sl350 on Wednesday and went home thinking I might buy it. But I’d already arranged to see the blue one yesterday (Thursday). The blue one was much nicer and obviously looked after, so it’s now sat on my driveway!

Excellent, was it the blue one you posted earlier?

I know, but to go from 18" to 16" on a 350 might upset the geometry.
We are finding getting out of the car too now a little difficult especially me as I have to have the seat flat on the floor to get the most comfortable position :(The SL is a lot better to get out of for me though I have it set on the highest level which isn't as high as the 500 was on top level. The E Class is good for me, but as I get more decrepit I think an ML is going to be the best alternative  Oh isn't age and health the pits!
If you have the upgraded callipers on the front 16" don't fit. We had a 2010 SLK200K with that problem.

That I couldn't tell you. It is the model with the red band on the engine cover and no red line on the rev counter. Lucky that because I've seen the rev counter needle touch on 8000 rpms :D
The brakes are very good similar to the SL.

Blobcat, yes the one in the advert that I linked before. It’s in fantastic condition and almost everything works. So far the only thing I’ve found that doesn’t work is the lumbar support on both seats. Leak on an air line somewhere maybe? Or a fuse?
