Hi to you all!

Newbie here!

The name's Simon. I live in the North West and am mid 20s.

Massive car fan - currently drive a SEAT Ibiza Cupra TDI - love the car to bits but have future plans for something with a 3 pointed star on the steering wheel!

My current plan is to keep the SEAT for a few years as i do big miles at work, and the Mrs has a decent sized family car so no rush and im happy with my little torque monster!

However, tell you a little tale. Back in 1996, when i was just 14, i was taken to Germany on a school exchange. Great trip, and one of the german lads' Dads worked for MB at Stuttgart so he took us round the museum - and then round the factory! Great stuff!

However, more recently i've been a BMW and Audi fan - in that order. Until more recently as Clarkson puts it that all Audi's are driven by c0cks! And people have always said that about BMWs! So, the ultimate choice for me in the future is a Merc!

I just hope i can get a current shape C200 CDI Sport within my budget in 3 years or so time!

Anyway, maybe im looking at the wrong car! So, going to spend a bit of time on here and hope to be able to make sure i can get the best model going when ready for a change!! :D

Welcome sib.

The SEAT is really the thinking man's Audi (same parts bin), so a shrewd choice.

Your eventual selection will be very much a personal matter. Many of us run cars which are not the current model and greatly enjoy the excellent engineering of MB cars, which is pretty timeless. Whilst a high proportion of cars made in the last 25 years are still in service, parts and information and expertise are readily available on them all.

Which ever one you choose is likely to be a winner. :)

Thanks for the responses guys.

Hey - for me, the C200 CDI Sport will be the choice should all go to plan financially!

More recently, i've looked into the option of a T reg C-Class diesel Classic, i know it's only 10 yrs old and i suppose is a modern Mercedes but still it's not a 'new' car as such!

Other option is even a big comfy coupe - looked at both the old shape and new shape CLK.

Just something a bit magical about Mercs for me - will never forget that factory tour in 1996, and museum visits in 96, 98 and 2000.

The 1996 visit by the way was particularly good as MB had just launched the 1996-2002 model E-Class and i'd never seen one in the UK before - have got lots of pics somewhere of that 'future' mercedes!!

Thanks!

I wouldn't hold your breath - you could be waiting a while.

Just looking now in fact.

I've basically told Autotrader.co.uk to show me results, up to 10 yrs old and up to 60k. My budget is about £12k. Must be a diesel though. See what the site says!

As i say, not for now but i want to use this site as an information resource in the build-up to finding the car. Just checking out Autotrader to see what i could get now, if now was then - if you see what i mean!

Can one of you answer me this?

Bear in mind im fairly new to considering a Merc ownership.

If i were to drive 160 miles, over say 2 hrs 45 mins - typical time for that specific journey in a 55 plate E270 CDI, what sort of economy would i get?? Not sure on an average speed but lets say 70-80 ish most of the motorway bit (approx 120 miles), then 10 miles or so of windy country lanes and 30 miles or so of fast single to dual to single carriageway with long straights for passing wagons etc.

My SEAT can do this trip in 2 hrs 45 as i say, with an average of around 48 mpg. Im guessing i wouldn't get this is a E270?? What about a C200??

My old C200 over 100 mile trip of pure motorway driving at a steady 70 mph, will return 56/58 mpg.!!!!!!!
