Another Spring Gone!

Put my C Class in to get the clutch replaced. The Indie called me today, to tell me that the cluthch is repaired, but the car has a broken f/o/s spring. What is it with springs? Is the C Class known for dodgy springs? This is the fourth spring I've renewed on this car, and the second on this particular corner. I've had the car 3 years, and to be honest, it sits in the garage weekdays, as I use the van for work. In fact, since it was MOT'd in March, it's only done 100 miles! The Indie reckons it could be down to red chips in the driveway, catching in the tyre, and falling into the wheel well, then getting jammed in the coils, and subsequently causing the spring to fracture when under stress...(or something like that). To be honest, it sounds like a pile of pants to me...but then again, I'm not very technically minded! Has anyone ever heard of this, or had any experiebce with broken springs on their C Class?

This is nothing to do with stones, the most likely cause is that the tempering is wrong, on a whole batch.
tempering springs a specialist job, a bit over the top and they are brittle, either that or the seat that the spring sits on is deformed, some where I have seen a caution when changing them, I will try and find it

This is where I get confused! I'm pretty sure it's a 203 Malcolm.

As Blobcat mentioned elsewhere the chance are is that the indie is using a non MB spring, buy your own from MB, I cant re call broken springs on a 203 here before.

So nice having a head with different thinking on some of the threads:D :D

Thanks for that Malcolm. I really appreciate your time and effort. If you would be so good as to email me, I would be obliged. I'll ensure it's MB springs that are fitted.
I've PM'd you my email address.
Thanks again Malcolm.

 W211 front springs are also prone to breaking, even when the car is stationary, info from a well respected Indie following a failure on a W211 E220CD. :(

OK...So it would appear I'm not alone in the spring replacement department! I'm off to collect the car now, and I'll be quizzing him about this in some detail.
Update to follow!

My wifes 203 (2001) has had springs replaced twice in the first 5 years from new. I think Malcolm has it right about incorrect temper but the batch must have been very large. The car only does about 5000 miles a year and is driven very carefully. Perhaps the spring rate has been incorrectly calculated. I always change the pair of springs rather than individual springs.
By the way I have not had chance to look yet, but there is another intermittent knock, could it be again?
