A fellow elsewhere opined that diesel oil with a zinc additive was good for his W107 380SL, silenced engine noise and smoothed it out. would you agree? Disagree?

The change to a thicker oil may have quietened it down, I doubt it was more than that though or just fresh oil.

Cheers

For racing, a really good warm-up is essential, except perhaps with special 0W/20 low-drag race oils. The trouble is, oil pumps are very good at pushing oil out at 60PSI, but unfortunately there is only 14PSI (atmospheric pressure) pushing it in! (Even less in Katmandhu.) So it’s easy for an oil pump to pull voids or pockets of vacuum in the oil if it doesn’t flow fast enough into to uptake. This ‘cavitation’ obviously reduces the amount of oil the pump can deliver.

It will be fine, its not an extended oil service oil so will need changing every 10-12,000 or once a year which ever comes first.

Also it will not suitable for Diesels fitted with diesel particulate filters.

Cheers

C220 cdi (2001) w203
Morning...

I have a 2001 w203 and yesterday whilst driving on the dual carriageway a oil warning light came on. When i stopped i checked the oil level and it told me to top up 2 litres !

This is the first warning that has came up about this, I don;t normally drive on dual carriageways so it hasn't been 'openned up' in a while.

Does this seem normal to add this much ??, there has been no leaks or anything.

If its fine, what type of oil should i be using to top it up ??

Hi

Yeah, i eventually when to a local car shop, asked them what type i needed, he checked his books and sold me the correct one (i hope), im not sure what it was off hand but im sure it was 10w something and a fully sinthetic one.

I was more worried about going from no warnings to one saying top up 2 litres !! It just seemed a big jump. The guiy in the shop said that the engine holds up to 7 litres so its more of a top up than anything else.

When I was in Kathmandu 2 years ago you may be intersted to note that the King (now ousted) was been driven around in a pristine W210 E430!.. but given the state of the roads he'd have been better off in a UniMog!

Here's an odd one.... In one of my other cars, the oil is recommended to have a high zinc content. People (in the US) state to use Mobil Delvac or similar.

What common oil over here has a high zinc content? Whenever i've asked this question to various motor factors or oil suppliers, they haven't got a clue!
