Not a Mercedes alarm but a Scantronic 9651 house alarm.
It was installed when the house was built almost 3 years ago, when I set it, it either says that the kitchen sensor is open and will not set or if it does let me set it, the alarm goes off, again, the kitchen sensor triggers it.

I tried hoovering round about it in case it was dusty but hasn't made any difference. It has anti tamper triggers, so if I try to fix it myself it will trigger the alarm I presume?

I'm no expert (as ever) but my guess would be that you need a new sensor for the kitchen? :)

The anti tamper wire will trigger an alarm if you open the top of the sensor. The most likely cause for it not setting is an open circuit caused by a faulty sensor, or broken wire.

What sensor are you talking about? Is it a magnetic sensor on the door or window or a vibration sensor on a window?

It is a motion detector, sits in the corner of the ceiling/walls.

The red light that lights on movement is still lit or flashing even when you stand still.

Some of the early movements sensors where lousy and triggered by any thing,,the later ones are much better and plug and play to replace the older ones

I was in my daughters house one evening and asked why she had a tea towel hanging in the corner of the living room,, oh the alarm keeps going off and that stops it she told me.. so I taped the front of the sensor with 2'' masking tape, until she could get it replaced/repaired ...some 6 months ago and yes still the same .. also all sorts of insects crawl into them and set them off.. My neighbour has banned daddy long legs from his house..

You could try taping over its window to blind it so to speak, dose it have a sensitivity adjuster screw?

Sounds like the motion sensor is US

You could remove the sensor and join the wires together to complete each circuit, but you will have to be careful not to join the voltage cables together or you will blow the fuses in the main box.
There should be 6 wires going into the sensor. Colours are up to each installer and therefore no exacting science as to which wire goes where.

2 wires will feed the anti-tamper circuit, they can be safely joined together
2 wires will feed the sensor circuit, they also can be joined together
1 positive and 1 negative wire must be taped up seperately and insulated.....Do not join them together.

When you remove the top of the sensor the anti-tamper will cause the alarm bell will start ringing, you should be able to unset it by putting your code into the keypad, the strobe will keep flashing until you press the reset button, but do not press it until you have removed the sensor and correctly joined up the respective wires

This must only be done as a temporary measure and a new sensor should be fitted as soon as you can

Also check all the wires inside the alarm box for loose connections

Just as an extra, it is unusual for a house to be fitted with the anti-tamper circuit, this is mostly used where the public have access to the property eg shops, public ammenity buildings, banks etc....

The reason I think it has an anti tamper is the sensor in the hall was setting the alarm off last year even although the alarm was unset (tamper hall sensor came up on the screen). The alarm company fixed that under the builders house warranty, but that has now run out. From what I can see on the internet, if I try to fix it myself, my access code may not be enough & it will require an installers code to stop the alarm going off?

It should unset with your code, an installers code is only used for reprogramming the system or recovering a lost number, but as I say don't press the reset button until the wires are joined together. If however it doesn't unset it should only ring for 20 mins maximum giving you time to remove the PIR (sensor) and join the wires and annoy your neighbours. When you open the PIR (sensor) it should have two terminals marked "+ positive" and "- negative", tape these wires up separately do not join them together, there will be two connections marked "tamper", join them together and two connections marked "alarm", join these wires together.

If you wear a benny hat or balaclava and hold a small torch in your mouth whilst doing this the neighbours wont pay any attention to you and let you work at it in peace..

The tamper part of the alarm is the cover om everything that is installed including the bell. most alarms cannot tell you what part of the tamper proof circuit is at fault but some will say zone 1,2 or what ever. What this means is the cover has been taken off something and incorrectly fitted and the cover is not operating the the switch. on all systems the tamper circuit is wired in series through the whole system

It says 15 minutes in the handbook, but the alarm rings inside the house not outside, the noise is unbearable, obviously designed to make an unwanted guest leave. Not sure I fancy playing around with wires with a noise louder than a Jumbo Jet taking off making my ears bleed! :D

I really don't have a clue. To buy a PIR is anything from a £8.00 upwards to £50.00 depending on the spec/type etc but you will also have to pay a call out charge and the technicians time. I would expect it to be under £100 total, but don't quote me

I would not be surprised if a yearly maintenance contract turned out to be cheaper than a call out & repair charge. I'll need to phone round a few, failing that invest in earplugs & a set of ear defenders and replace it myself.

(47p2 - not near Glasgow are you?, I assume you work with alarms?)
