Hmmm its a tough choice! I do actually love my car, i might hold on to it and see how the extra miles affect my pocket. Im so fussy with cars so to have one i like it does seem daft to get rid of it, just weighing up options i guess!

Good Decision.

Funny thing: I got sort of Marque restless and bought a Phaeton which I like a lot. Couldn't bring myself to sell the Mercedes and now keep getting into it because......well, I don't really know as it's four times the age of the P with four times the mileage. Maybe it just suits better.

Either you are a Mercedes man, or you ain't. Guess I am!

Thanks for all your advice guys. Im pretty sure im gonna hang onto the 320 for a while longer and see how things go. Like you say it always costs money to change cars anyway so im not likely to gain all that much and i think i'd always be kicking myself for letting my baby go!

You have made this point before Chris. Your link tells me:

CLK CLASS – 209 series

All steel panels were galvanized from Quarter 2 2003 production onwards.
During the previous six months (Q4 2002 + Q1 2003) the process was
gradually introduced on the production line and therefore some vehicles
were galvanized during this lead-up period, but not all.

Which I believe means from 04.03 (April 2003, i.e. beginning of Q2) production, which is what I wrote.

Yes but that is only for the CLK. Other models were mainly earlier. It wasn't clear to me that you only meant CLK's because you said: -
"I would look at any of the Mercedes diesels (post the galvanization date, i.e. manufactured after 04-03).

A C 320 CDI will give you comparable performance to your current car, much improved in gear acceleration and about 50% more mpg."

The entry from your link for C Class looks remarkably similar.

C CLASS -203 series- saloon and estates: -

All steel panels were galvanized from Quarter 2 2003 production onwards.

For some models, I agree that the piece suggests that galvanizing began earlier, for example the E Class piece:

"During the previous quarter (Q4, 2002) the process was gradually introduced
on the production line and therefore some vehicles were galvanized during
this lead-up period, but not all".

But to be sure of having a car which was built in the era of galvanizing, you really have to go for 04-03 onwards - which is a position Malcolm adopted some time ago, IIRC.

I don't want to nit-pick but that is sometimes right and sometimes wrong -especially for Malcolm's SL class.

Depends which model you take. It is misleading to talk of one date as it varies from model to model. The C class and CLK are as you describe but the E class, S class and CL class are earlier. And the SL is a fair bit later if you want to be safe. IMO instead of giving one date it is best to refer to the detailed thread.

E CLASS -211 series- saloon and estates: -
All steel panels were galvanised from Quarter 1, 2003, production onwards.
During the previous quarter (Q4, 2002) the process was gradually introduced
on the production line and therefore some vehicles were galvanised during
this lead-up period, but not all.

S CLASS –220series and CL class 215 series.

The S class and CL class are built of a combination of aluminium and steel. For the aluminium components there is, of course, no galvanising process.

All steel panels were galvanised from Quarter 1 2003 production onwards.

SL CLASS –R230 series
This is not so easy to be specific because the change-over period
continued right through into Q3 2004. So although many SLs were galvanised in early 2004 it is not till the end of the third quarter of 2004 that one can say that all were galvanised.
