Exciting last few laps, but for the life of me I can't understand why Mercedes didn't bring Lewis in when Verstappen pitted. We're they trying to recreate China 2007 maybe? It seemed a crazy risk to take at the time, not just in hind sight.

If Verstappen hadn't pitted he would have won, so you could say the reverse.

Absolutely, but as Red Bull blinked first, it was crazy for Mercedes not to take advantage.

Tyres are becoming a real problem this year when the cars are carrying enough speed to start breaking track records especially for the faster more abrasive tracks

Pirelli inspected the tyres removed from Verstappen's Red Bull after the race and found over 150 cuts.
They think it was caused by track debris. (Kimi lost his front spoiler late on that went across the track so I'm blaming him;))

Silverstone has a new track surface so unlikely to be that...

^It is still a track that is very tough on tyres due to the average speed.
If Pirelli say the tyre damage was caused by debris who are we to disagree?

Yes but I don't think the debris was to do with the track surface rather than current race debris.

Pirelli were embarrassed by their tyre failures on 2x cars so I guess they would look to make excuses...

I agree. I probably didn't make myself clear in that it was bits of car causing the tyre damage.
The track contributed to the tyre wear simply by being so quick with high G force cornering:D

Three cars had tyre failures - both Mercedes and a McLaren.

It makes sense what AMGeed said.
The left front tyre is put under very high stress at Silverstone, so anything that reduces its structural integrity(cuts from carbon fibre debris) will make a failure much more likely to occur where it maybe wouldnt have at other tracks.

It is a shame we cannot have other manufacturers producing tyres for F1 as that would add an extra dimension, especially as items such as refuelling have been removed..

I think there were more tyre problems. They didn’t manifest as failures but quite a few teams were very concerned about the front left

There used to be a choice of Bridgestone, Michelin, Goodyear and Pirelli tyres(not all available at same time though) with one or other having advantages at certain tracks.
Remember the farcical situation one year in America where Michelin said their tyre was not safe to run on the banking, so the majority of the grid went into the pit lane to retire after the formation lap.
Ferrari and Michael Schumacher cruised to their easiest victory ever. :D

Jinking when being overtaken on normal roads would be dangerous in the extreme.
Doing it a la Grosjean at racing speeds was inexcusable, and could have resulted in major disaster.
His whole mindset is wrong.
The sooner he's out of F1, the better.

He has form in that area.
Remember when he first joined F1 and the complaints from other drivers due to the number of crashes that he caused at the start of races.

Well I guess that they'll be revising their opinion that the hard tyre would last 40 laps!
I see that they've stipulated higher tyre pressure for this weekends race.
I wonder how the new 18" tyres that they're using in F2 would have coped, I guess that they'll have a naturally stiffer side wall.
