Any one know what this thing does??

Pic attached…

It’s for an Mreg E200 petrol automatic WDB 124 079 2F3 190 40.

I had 3 problems. 1, lumpy idle. 2, pinking. 3, intermittent (3-5 times
a day aprox) sudden revs to 2000 then stall.

Changed cheap bits first: fitted new plugs, air flow sensor, water temperature sensor and checked vacuum pipes.
Then used parts: throttle body, OVP relay, had the wiring loom rebuilt changed the ECU.
The worst of the problems (no.3) seems to be gone.

The car is now MOTd and useable but I've gone this far, It be nice if I could smooth out the other probs.

I'm reading up and phoning around for advice as I am a novice in this area, I’m clutching at straws. If I can find out what the thing in the picture does (I’m told it’s called an ignition module/PMS unit). It may be worth seeing what happens if I fit another one.

Any advice appreciated & has anyone got one to sell?

Thanks. Dean Pesticcio.

I cant honestly believe that that box will improve things, it would give more problems other than at idle

Could try replacing the cap and rotor arm, and checking the leads in case they are breaking down. Check the centre electrode inside the cap to see if it is intact and that it's clean inside. Could be as simple as that!

Good luck,

Chris.

do you have a slight miss up to 3000rpm when pulling away when cold ? if you pull the two plugs out & check for rust on the pins

Did you replace the coils when doing the wiring loom and plugs? Also the long connectors under the coils?

Look at what happens in the dark in the engine bay; wonders may be revealed..... (this is not a smutty joke reference to copulating ignition components btw)
