Can anyone tell me what date MB stopped using the 5.5L V8 Biturbo?
Thinking of going back to an SL.

But I want the old fashioned big under-stressed engine. Sorry I just do not believe in this ECO tosh. Nice idea, but if you really want to save the planet - simply stop buying from China and India the worlds biggest polluter's and make stuff here - creating millions of jobs.
plus I miss the deep Growl the big ones make.

I think they moved to a 4L Bi turbo V8 possibly in the 2016/2017 facelift job? , but one salesman said they went on till 2019 or 2020.

You want the R231 model 2015 to 2022, was replaced by R232 soft top. That has the twin turbo 5.5l v8.

This may assist

I opted for the SL500 as a lot cheaper to run with similar performance as can be seen above. Both have twin turbo V8 but SL63 sounds better as it has the switchable performance exhaust.

If it is hard top post 2013 you have the correct version..

I am a SL63 owner, my car is a 2016 model. It is a lovely engine, 5.5 litres V8 biturbo with 900NM of torque. Highly recommended. The 2015 to 2019 cars had slightly more grunt. up from 535 to 577 BHP and 800 to 900 NM as standard. Prior to 2015 you had to pay for the performance pack to get those numbers.

Seriously good car, fabulous noise. Very relaxing if you just want to cruise, you never see much over 1,500 RPM in comfort mode. It just burbles along, with the roof down. Then open it up, and things get very silly indeed.

Exactly what I want. Utterly unstressed engine, cruising at 90 mph …. With more grunt than you can believe in reserve.
I think the pre 2017 facelift one , without the big nostril flares were the last truly beautiful SLs.

Sorry, forgot to say, the 5.5 V8 biturbo M157 engine went on to 2019 IIRC, but not many later ones for sale.
IMO probably the best engine built for domestic users.
Enquiring at the main dealers, he showed me a C63 … apparently it has a 2 litre engine!!! … WTF.
personally I think its an obscenity to abuse the AMG trade mark like that.

If tuned and pushed to equal a real 5.5L‘s output - I recon people will see nightmare engine problems at 30,000 miles … but then you may think I am an old fuddy duddy.
Fair enough, but having bought 12 MBs from new … I watched the quality drop Over time.

As for dropping the folding hardtop - madness.
I remember my first SL Continental road trip. All fine down to Lyon, where we left the detachable hardtop at their main dealers to pick up on return.
Cruised around the South Coast, every day seagulls “bombed“ the cloth like roof, a total “C@nt” to clean!
All the jet washes used snowfoam that had an acidic value off the charts. Recon if you washed it every day, after 15 days it would have stripped your clearcoat off! But then I am fussy.
So manual hosing every early evening. Ughhh

Then came the folding hardtop … utter perfection except 3 of them leaked within a year. But cured with the retro fit ”glued” version. Next 5 road trips were a dream!

Had my 2014 R231 SL500 with the 4.7l twin turbo for 7 years now, hard top never leaked, fully serviced but never let me down, only 1x set of pads required (64k miles), the only component failure was the washer motor! That was replaced then they discovered it was only a kink in the pipe....

Carries 2x sets of golf clubs with the roof down, been to Scotland and back Absolute dream.

Check but I think the 63 has carbon brakes, can be pricey to change.

Economy is not too bad on the M157 SL63, if it is of interest, I saw 27.4 mpg on a two hour run down to Kent recently, mixed motorway and stop start. I generally see mid twenties without too much effort, which is incredible, given the performance. I think AMG really nailed it with the M157, and I am not the first to say this. Epic engine.

Fuel economy is noticeably better than my M113K SL55, which struggled to return 20mpg.

After years of struggling with the R230, MB seem to have conquered many of the issues with the R231. So far I have only spent a couple of hundred pounds on the car in over a year of ownership.

I can confirm my SL63 does not have carbon brakes. I have never seen an SL63 with carbon brakes, I am not sure if this was an option. I would definitely avoid.

Depending on the AMG model you choose, you’ll receive one of the three following Mercedes-Benz AMG brake systems in your vehicle:

AMG High-Performance Braking System- Perforated rotors and rear rotors boasting silver-painted fixed calipers
AMG High-Performance Composite Braking System- Front and rear ventilated, slotted, ventilated, and perforated composite rotors
AMG High-Performance Compound Braking System- Two-piece carbon and ceramic compound rotors; lighter than other brake systems

Actually virtually no late SLs period!
I will wait till the autumn , when there used to be more for sale.
But they are achieving MAD prices atm.
Apparently partly due to supply, shortage of chips ref Ukraine War.
And this salesman said the usual SL buyers just dont like the new overstressed smaller engines.?
Plus the lack of a folding hardtop is very unpopular!

The only V12 R231 was the SL65. The SL65 is a lot rarer, and a lot more expensive than the SL63, if you can find one. Rarely more than 1 UK car for sale at any time, with telephone number prices to match.
