Mercedes 208D T1 van 1989
Good Morning,
I have owned a later 1990 208d from new. The main problem with these vehicles it does not matter if it is a van or a chassis and cab is rust.
The 207/307d should be fitted with the OM616 engine which is a good reliable engine if it has been looked after properly with oil changes every 4000 miles.

Not a fast vehicle quite low geared it is happy at about 50mph. If speed is what you are after then a sprinter is your best bet.
Gearbox and rear axle are strong again if looked after properly.
No power steering as standard.
May have been fitted with a 4 speed gearbox some people have fitted a later 5 speed overdrive gearbox.
I have enclosed 2 links to You Tube videos on rust repairs on a t1 auto trail camper.
Hope this is of help.

Must admit....no not a name ;), and as already stated it's very rare to find a T1 in rust free condition.
Mr 55b and yourself must be 2 owners of the remaining handful in the UK. It's appears that the vast majority
Merc. commercials seem to suffer, mine included. Mind you judging by the posts on this forum quite a lot
of their car output fare little better. So glad I have a Lexus !

ps Coincidence or what, the post following this one just happens to be 'what are the safe years for Merc. rustwise.'
843 posts and growing:shock: Correction twas yesterday, still...... point made.

Now named Colonel Mustard :), Passed its MOT yesterday with only one advisory about a small oil leak, so very pleased. Now the long winded process of registering it.

That's good to know. How did you get on with the chassis number and will cause any problems with the registration.
I didn't have any luck at all really, im finding it difficult to get much info at all about this model. The MOT garage just entered the numbers as they appear on the Chassis and on its Serbian registration card without any WDB, im hoping this won't be an issue. too try to minimise any problems, I am using an import company who do it all day long, they will charge almost £300 for doing it, but if it goes straight through ill be happy enough.
On your van, does the chassis number and log book have the letters before the numbers?

The chassis number and registration log book V5 do have the WDB before the chassis number.
Is your van data plate and chassis number in the in the same location as mine?.
I just wonder if the entry step has been replaced in the past due to accident damage or rust. May be you could post a couple of pictures could help.
I use to have a 207d from 1983 and i still have the original sales invoice for it i will have a look over the weekend and check the number of numbers after the WDB
Check the pictures i posted on your other request on( vin code on my 1983 T1).

Sorry i must correct my post Number 13 from Saturday.
The V5 and the sales invoice of my old 207d do NOT have the WDB in front of the chassis number nor do my my MOT certificates. The 2 yellow production data cards which came with the 208d DO have the WDB on the chassis number. I use them to order parts from Mercedes.
Your data plate appears to have WDB printing missing. I have enclosed a image for you to compare.
Does your chassis number appear on the footwell to the right of your data plate?.
I have enclosed a link to catcarinfo. I put the full chassis number with the WDB and it recognised your chassis number.

Is your camper a Westfalia if it is the 602DKA code may denote this.
Hope this is of help.

The older ones obviously never had them then, MB Guildford did manage to feed the number into their system using a WDB in front but the info was hardly anything and it came up as a 2001 which it obviously isn’t. I feel better that your older one does not show it either and I’ll check for other plates later

With that chassis number stamped in the footwell you should not have any trouble registering it.
No, it’s just odd that I can’t get any proper info up on it, if it were an MB car I would have build date, all the colour and trim info, extras etc.
