Just put a deposit on an E Class 220d. Yes pretty boring I know, but long commutes mean I have gone sensible for the time being.

Had planned to get a bigger engine this time around, but the head prevailed over heart.

How does this engine compare to the outgoing 2.1L diesels? Headline figures are impressive. Any thoughts?

Much much better economy, I did 48k in a W213 220d great engine, powerful enough and is regularly get over 80mpg on a 3 hour 180 mile run.

I’d come from 320 CDI so wasn’t expecting much but was massively impressed. So much better than the previous il4

I had a brand new C220 as a courtesy car from Mercedes Edinburgh, a journey across the M8 at rush hour in both directions, one I've done many times, usually resulted in 43mpg from my CLK220CDi, 50mpg in my C250, and without even trying the new C220 was showing 70mpg for the same journey.

Found my old thread page 3 has the highest figures.

About 1,815 kg I think for a W213 E220d

Fair play can't grumble at those kind of fuel figures if they are comfortably obtainable. No doubt, the extra gearing has a major part to play helping the economy/performance figures.

At the same time, the larger capacity engine also become more efficient than their predecessors due to the above in part and I'd say, always best to get a long test drive in both especially when covering lots of miles and spending time in a car.

It's 3 years since I purchased my (then) 18 month old C250 Bluetec AMG-line sport estate. It's been a great car to own but it was in for an alloy wheel refurb (x2) which also resulted in a need for a new (runflat) tyre (I've had my money's worth out of the tyre/wheel insurance:)).

It's dangerous leaving me alone in a MB showroom for an hour and a brand new E220d AMG-line Premium estate (hyacinth red - with 20inch AMG alloys FFS) took my eye - especially as it was being offered at a £9k discount! I haven't bought new since the early 80's but this time, let my heart rule my head and picked it up in under a week.

I too, wondered about the very slight bhp difference, heavier car, 0-60 around 1 second or so slower (I'm old but quick:D) but in the first week of ownership, I have no regrets (until I see the bank balance, that is). I've yet to get through a tank-full of diesel but it appears to be doing between 45 and 55 mpg, on a mixture of round town and urban runs, which is already better than the C250. I have no doubt that longer runs will be even better. The 9g gearbox is pretty good and will obviously help economy on those longer commutes.

Enjoy.
Phil

I really like the understated elegance of the newest e-class but it has to have the bigger alloys and AMG styling pack to really look its best imo
See I don’t like that and paying £2,500 more for plastic seats confuses me... I’d rather have comfort and nice leather. (And I could always stick an AMG badge on the back if I felt the need to):D

I'm with Blobcat on this. I don't want 19" (or 20") wheels on a non sports car. It's for comfort. What I would like is an SE spec with a light interior, full digital dash, proper leather, panoramic roof, full Airmatic. Can I find a used one like this for sale? No. All seem to have AMG Line interiors in charcoal grey...

Thank you all, great responses.
Although I am not buying solely for economy reasons it will certainly be a great benefit!
Main reason for buying this car is comfort. I at times feel the 2.1L engines are a little 'rough' and 'rattly'. Have in the past been used to the V6 diesels. Let's see how the new 2.0L engine fairs in that respect. I am sure it will not be as smooth and refined as a V6, but if it delivers the power quietly it would be great!

I went for the SE spec this time. Big thing for me was having the full leather and there are just none out there which are AMG with leather (or very rare). I suspect because it was a 3k+ option! I am also very happy with the smaller alloys with fatter tyres, which will also make it more economical and perhaps quieter on the road. Yes the AMG looks great but I guess I am getting older and unfortunately these things are becoming less important!

Really wanted one with the premium pack, i.e. pano roof, memory, etc but one came up in 'poverty spec' at a great price, from an official MB dealer so I bit the bullet.

Collecting end of next week, it will be a long 400 mile drive back so that will be a great chance to get familiar with the car...

Will report back!

Great choice and I'd be exceptionally surprised if you're not impressed.

I found it very smooth and quiet for a Diseasal and very very quiet - silent when in the cabin and moving and only the slightest noise when stationary - a Black cab it isn't! :)

The comfort from the 17's is good and they're also much less likely to get curbed or crack from our wonderful roads than then huge AMG wheels.

The new Black cabs are hybrid petrol-electric and utterly silent inside...

I was referring to the Nissan 2.5d rather than the version I saw launching up the hill at Goodwood in 2017:D (which is what you're talking about)

I wonder with the ULEZ's and the like how long cabbies will be allowed to sit with their engines running at cab ranks around the country in the very near future?

You won’t regret buying it my son is 8 months into the ownership of his and was adamant when buying it that he would chop it in after 2 years and he now tells me he’s going to keep it as long as he can they are a great platform for doing serious miles in. His came with AMG styling, full digital dash and 20in wheels, I’m really impressed with it in every way can’t fault it, Mercedes seem to have mastered the science of McPherson struts at last the ride even on 20in wheels is excellent, the OM654 is frugal and provides a good turn of speed when required and 50mpg is an every day reality unless of course you are a city dweller.

I won’t hesitate to buy one when the 212 goes, can’t think of a car that moved on by such a dramatic leap other than the Ford Escort to the Focus Mk1, I’m sure there are others but you get the point
