anything exceeding an easy 50mpg is grand to me these days i am lucky getting over 40 ! and diesel will be £ ?? a litre in ten yrs . i think my a class 03 w168 is doing 50 mpg which has always impressed me given its relative lack of tech...

Great engine so far, lots of nice touches, but too "new" to see any major long term issues. Its fully alunimum so much lighter than the 651, and more thermally efficient, as can be seen by the economy numbers posted.

It also has a simplex chain which is the only negative I can say about the engine.

I’ve seen some 100k milers up on autotrader so perhaps it’s not the issue it was

If they are looked after, (like the 651) they can last a long time. Often, many are not and run thousands past the intervals with cheap oil.

Reporting back after collecting the car.
I must say, answering my original question...the engine really is fantastic and a real big step up from the 4 pots of old. Very smooth and refined and definitely quick enough for day to day driving - certainly quicker than the previous generation engines. I also found it is less noisy than the 250cdi we have in the GLC. I was looking for the v6 in all honesty, but they are few and far between (and expensive), I am very glad I ended up with the 220d!
The car - well it is great. Comfortable, cruises nicely on the motorway. Absorbs bumps and deviations in the road. So far, so good.
Couple of niggles but will get them sorted hopefully soon!

I see you’re in the default of “c” mode, set up the “I” mode with sports steering and comfort / eco for the rest and you get a nice compromise with great economy :)

I got over 70 mpg from my W 203 C220 Cdi on a recent trip to Scotland - but I only drive at about 60 mph.

Yes, I was going a little fast than that. I am usually a little heavy footed, except for the average speed sections. I think if I had been sensible with the loud pedal it would have been much better, but I am happy with what I achieved.

Blobcat - interesting point, I have never though of using the individual setting in that way, will give it a go!
