You would love one with the 7g box Steve, you should try it sometime

Sadly the one with the 7g was the issued car.

It would be wrong of me to say I hated it. The engine was very refined, it drove a lot better than the AG e class and had a collossal amount of power. It have me many happy times but the rust and unreliability put a bad taste on those.

The wee estate car is a jolly little thing and very practical and nice to drive.

I bought a new 124 E250D in 1996 (old stock)was a good car but very sluggish, then I bought a 3yr old E270 CDI W211 I loved it fast quiet and economical, then I bought a 3yr old CLS 320 CDI absolute rocketship I loved it .....it had a few know probs but still a fantastic car, I now have a Jaguar XF which is very good to drive and handles better than the Merc but I think I will go back to Merc when the time comes.:D

tell us why ?

Possibly because he doesn't like driving a car with formica fitted in the door panels, has leather which looks tired after only a few thousand miles and looks like a slightly deranged drug dealers special.

As you might guess I tried one and didn't like it. I used to like Jags but not the XF, the XJ is better and the XK better still, too bulky but without the presence that the bulk could impart.

I friend of mine always swear by his BMW's,when I picked him up to take him to bowls a couple of months ago,he sat in the Merc and said "what is that smell",I replied "thats leather".

This true story is always a micky take with him at our club.

What everybody forgets is that mercs were about TWICE the price of new jags in the 70s - an XJ6 4.2 was cheaper than a 123 200 petrol. Now, an e series is cheaper than an equivalent citroen C6... so you get what you pay for.

Hi its not that it is'nt a good car it IS, and in my opinion is one of the best Jaguar has ever made, the engine is super smooth and pretty economical, and the 6 speed autobox makes the horrid 7G look archaic.

The only real gripes I have is the gimmicks, I dont like the rising gear knob and the turning vents on start up and also the lack of rearward vision, is even worse than the CLS,s

Otherwise it is a very well made comfortable quiet and pretty quick car.

Its pretty obvious you hav'nt looked very close at the XF interior, for a start the wood is actually wood ......there was another poster who thought it was formica and Jaguar replied stating it is wood veneer glued to an aluminium base, as for the leather there are a number of differing types available but unlike MB Tex they are all real Leather and as Parkers guide stated recently they seem to wear very well, mine is cream interior and after nearly 30k is still unmarked.

And as for your comment on it being a drug dealers special, was that monica not attributed to the E350cdi Sport cabriolet  also just hope your injectors dont fail like a few recently.
As you can see I dont agree with your views and reckon you hav'nt really driven an XF let alone an XJ which employs the same drivetrain as the XF.

If there is a common theme here I guess it is stick with older cars and avoid the main dealers which I suppose is where I am at. I came from a 2002 5 series which I kept for 9 years, it did everything well , didn’t break or rattle and felt right from the start.

The E39 530 is the best all round car ever made. If they launched it today I still think it would get the universal praise it got throughout its life.

I left the d of 530 because the 530i was the best car ever made, but the 530d was a close second. ;)

Cars these days in this sector our now built to a budget.
My old man paid £38k for his E Class in 1993, we paid £36k for our house the year after, that house has just sold for £189,000, you can buy a new E250 for around £35k.
Something has to give somewhere.

No point comparing your old E39, everything will seem dispaointing after that, I went from a 530i sport touring to a 535d sport touring, it was good, but not as good.

I went from a W211 E320cdi to a W212 E350cdi, again it was a nice car, a very nice car, just a shame it wasn't as nice as the previous model. :(

The main dealers are becoming assholes, but to be fair 20 years ago they didn't have to deal with 'plebs'* all day then, when a new car was the price of a house only the rich came in, they were told what it costs and they paid it, no arguing and therefore no resentment. We also didn't have the internet then, so when the dealer said "They all do that sir." I guess we had to believe them?

I have basically fecked all dealers off, no more loyalty for me, I simply buy at whoever will sell it me the cheapest, don't want their coffee, don't want their wifi, don't want to go for a beer with them while ordering and hopefully I will not have to look at them in court when things go wrong and I am told 'They all do that though m'lord.'

Buy the car cheap, when it ****es me off sell it on and not take too much of a hit.

And to think, buying a car used to be fun. :p

*Plebs being what I am sure the dealers call anyone who doesn't just bend over!

190 1.8 1993, then W124 3.0 diesel estate 1995, now W124 220 saloon - great car but I miss the straight six diesel sound.

You rather miss the point. It may well be real wood but it looks like formica and unless you spend your time taking a car to pieces rather than driving it then it is the "look" that counts as any car maker will tell you.Two demo XFs at my local main agents display tired looking leather with less than 15000 on the clock ,again it's what they look like that counts even if they are made with myrrh. If the show models look like this then what does that say?

The XJ just has more presence regardless of the drivetrain on which I made no comment. Jags used to have something special, lean, mean and dangerous, the XF looks middle aged. Fine if you want a middle aged car but it is not what made Jags that little bit special. I am sure it is a good car but it has too much "bling" for me,fablon in the doors and a wurlitzer rising out of the fascia.

I don't think drug dealers drive soft tops, too insecure, but I bow to your superior knowledge of the breed. I only met them when they were in handcuffs and not looking their best.

If my injectors go then I know a MB garage that will fix it under warrenty so it is not really an issue which concerns me.

By the way,who is Monica? I don't know anyone by that moniker.

The ZF 6spd is a great transmission. I agree re 7g.

Bar the gimmicks it sounds a success and if it's been reliable I'd stick with jaguar. Me, I'd have an XK as a GT car, I like the look of them.

They get their fare share of faults,,,,,you must stop knocking the 7g box Steve. it just is not fair, I have one and I have been out in 5 cars with it and they were all perfect

This was a good interesting thread that started by asking members how many Mercs they had owned ........and you have just attempted to make it an assasination on the Jaguar XF and myself.

On reading your posts again I realise that you are a right up your own arse,
and dont know what you are talking about....... so with that in mind I wont waste my time posting any replies to any future sad git posts you make.

Loved the bit about me spelling the word monika wrongly, I am sure I read this:......... If my injectors go then I know a MB garage that will fix it under (warrenty.)
if you are going to pull people up on there spelling I would suggest you learn to spell yourself 1st .

Its interesting that the Jaguar XF won car of the decade and has consistantly scored far higher than Mercedes in the JD power Surveys.

Hi Television,

I am with Steve on this one the 6 speed box in the XF is the same box used in the later BMWs but in the Jaguar XF it has Jaguars own software, the Jaguar box it totally seamless and even when in S and dropping into 1st using the paddles it does'nt produce any jerking, unlike the 7G, as you know I also frequent the XF info Forum and if you look you will find the only moans about the XF gearbox is about the new 8 speed fitted to the latest XF's.

I have driven quite a few Merc's including a couple of E classes
fitted with the 7G and my old CLS which had the 7G and when I was on this site loads of owners complained about it , and still do,.

In my opinion it lets these nice cars down with always being in the wrong gear and clunking down into 1st gear and also failing valve blocks etc, the old 5 speed was a far superior box, and gave far less trouble.
