I've an e350 sport at the mo with all the bits..awesome motor. I still have a c270 est which I've had 8 years (for sale btw)been a great car. Had a Beemer and a friend has had audis for the last 30 yrs.Mercs just shine above them. Beemers just have no class and do u bother looking back at an Audi.

We're on our third now... 1990 W126 300SE, 1999 W210 320CDI Estate and 2004 W220 320CDI. For me, no other car is possible, it feels like heresy.

Next one, however, will be a V8. Tired of this economical rational diesel mindedness ;)

There seems to be a bit of a theme here.

Those who have run cars pre W204, W212 etc. seem to think there is no other brand worth considering, and those that have started with those cars seem to think they are average at best.

You have the odd person who thinks they are in a different league but then they have come from Vauxhall or similar.

Expectations are everything with a car, personally I was about to write Mercedes off on modern cars for things that I can afford, I agree the S Class is till the best car in the world, but the new C Class has pricked my ears again.
Too small for me, but makes me think Merc have been listening and watching what everyone else is doing, think the next few years could be exciting for Merc fans, a return to form.

Used to have a C63...
Just got my third MB, and the first one that was purely a "heart" decision; the CLS was a heart & head buy, and proved absolutely superb.

Would have another in a heartbeat... And may well do so if the new acquisition gets the better of me!

How do you class the comfort angle of the 2 cars for all round use please.

Hi Malcolm,

It won't surprise you to hear that they are chalk & cheese!

I'd deliberately targeted a W219 on 17s as it was to be used as a mile-muncher - at that it excelled. Very quiet at motorway speeds, very comfortable... Just a very agreeable place to spend several hours at a time before and after work. I really would have another in a heartbeat.

The 63, well...... MB Dorchester let me have a good 45 min test drive (didn't get to motorways, but some good stretches on A roads (single and dual). It will come as no surprise that it simply can't (shouldn't?) compare to the CLS.

The engine retires surprisingly well into the background when cruising - with gearbox in C, it generally like to change up around 1500 rpm, and is very smooth. Actually the gearbox is probably better than the CLS (mine was a 57 reg), no soft thunk on 2-to-1 down changes rolling up to traffic lights, for example.

Road noise from tyres is the biggest thing - again, no surprise, going from 245/45R17 all round, to 235/35R19 (front) and 255/30R19 (rear) - these are very surface dependant! On some fresher, smoother sections of Tarmac things are actually pretty good; older sections (or even worse, the red concrete section of the A30/303 towards Honiton) aren't great.

Ride quality was better than expected given the AMG PP.

Interior fit & finish is pretty good - not quite the cathedral feeling of the CLS, and whilst I don't really notice day-to-day, things like the leather dash and door cards on the CLS would be nice.

The thing is, the CLS was very much the old, reliable friend - beyond the frustrations of traffic, facing a 5-6 hr drive to work was no biggy. It just looks after you (not quite as much as your CL I suspect). Next to no wind noise at all on my 219. And mid-range torque that more than did the job!

The C63 was entirely a heart purchase, knowing it'll drink fuel (the majority of my mileage is part-subsidised); it's the whole experience of the 63 that draws you in; I've yet to have a proper run on a good road, but even at 3/10 it puts a smile on your face. Even behaving in give and take traffic, it tickles your chuckle-gland.

Of course, after a couple of the 5 hr runs, and fuelling it (I will miss the easy 650-700 mile range of the CLS), the story may change!

But at least I can say I had one... Which was a key factor! :)

PS. My girlfriends hates everything about it (except the colour!). She hates the seats, the number of exhausts, the road noise... And it apparently looks like an Escort!

CLS 500 / A 190
My family has literally had mercs for ever.

I've got a photo of my father in his early twenties with a 220se , he's in his sixties now and has had 114's , 124's , and currently runs an ML430 as a workhorse and has an immaculate and I mean immaculate CLK430 in azurite blue with 39k on it.

I've had a 230ce , a CLK320 cabriolet , a CLK430 and I've just bought a CLS500. My wife runs a w168 A190 which everyone said not to buy ( mainly people who have never actually owned one ) and has been great.

No real problems with any of them , just general wear and tear items , but I don't do many miles to be fair.

Can't see myself deviating from the brand when The wife or I fancy a new car.

an Escort!! Wash her mouth out!!:D

I know! She nearly walked back from Dorchester! (Not of her own volition, I might add!)

She's the only person I know who could grimace & complain in her sleep!

I wouldn't mind, but I drove like a saint!!!

There really isn't a logical reason to me getting the 63 Malcolm - the CLS was pretty much a perfect fit to 80-90% of the mileage that I do.

But sometimes... Just sometimes... That itch has to be scratched!!! :-D

And I guess I'm not that extravagant with other things, so thought what the hell - do it while I can! If job changes then I'll have to revert to sensible choices!

I've had a 2002 CLK230K for 3 years. Only thing that went wrong was a brake light switch which cost me just £11.50.
I have a 2005 CL500 and the only thing that has failed so far is a crankshaft position sensor, £55.
I'm sticking with the brand for the forseeable future.

As a brand they do take some beating in terms of comfort, and one could say very nice to drive aspect.

I had the CPS fail on my CL500 shortly after buying it. I have a keyless go small problem in that the door opens some times, and not others, the press button start and boot always work, but now the wrong time of the year to strip out the door to get to the lock.

I have owned 7 mercs in all over the years, my latest one is a w204 C220 exec se blue motion 2014 and to be honest I think I would have done better to buy a Ford Mondeo and in my opinion MB are trading on past glories my wife loves it apart from the R/V mirror which is a manual dip and she cannot reach the leaver to dip the mirror . But I knew that soon as the Yanks got involved with MB they would cock it up and as for the screen on the dash it looks like some one suck an Ipad there as an afterthought
