What engine oil should my 2004 (54) C180 Komp have ? Dealer says Mobil 1 but doesn't know what grade to use (yes, unbelievable but sadly true). Presume 5W-40 is ok ..... ?? Consuming humble pie as you read.

Not a dumb question at all!........I dont know for a fact but i would think that either Mobil 1 5w-40 or 0w-40 would be absolutely fine.

Mobil 1 5W-40 has been used in my E240 since new, if the dealer did not know that what else does he not know, a tad worrying methinks.

Thanks. I'll try 5W-40 as a safe bet.

BTW, my now ex-dealer clearly doesn't know a number of basic things. More probably, they also don't know what they don't know. It's what Donald Rumsfeld used to call the "unknown unknowns" .....

If you've got the service book it lists the grades in there, compared to the typical ambient temp. In the UK, you can use almost any grade.

Caution

Hi
I remember reading on one of those "everything you need to know about" websites that you have to be careful which oil you put in. Seems that if your motor has always had fully synthetic in then everythings ok and you can use semi or whatever else is suitable for that model. However, if it has only had semi or mineral and you use fully synthetic e.g. mobil 1 and your car has fairly high mileage then it will release all the tarry coatings that have built up inside the engine possibly sending them to places where they can cause problems.
Sorry if this sounds like scaremongering but it's just what the article said. Can't remember the name of the site but if you're really interested I can probably find out for you.
Cheers
Pete

Certainly not dumb to ask which type of oil. What is dumb is my handbook, which stresses checking the oil and topping up etc, if necc., BUT DOESN'T SAY WHICH TYPE OF OIL!!! Bizarrely, its does tell me which oil to put in the rear axle. Which, er, I have never checked in my life

My 2001 C180 uses fully synthetic, service book states only fully synthetic must be used.
