Apple Carplay

Hi all

I bought a 2018 (new model) A Class last month. Its an Executive Auto 180d. My Apple CarPlay is deactivated, but I was sure it was part of the spec for this model. I dont want to spend the £299 online - does anyone have experience of a dealer retrospectively adding it?

As it is probably still under warranty (unless it was very early 2018) I would ask the dealer to sort it and see what they say.

people need to be far more aware of the spec they think a car has and its specific production date. The old days of a car staying the same for three years or more, disappeared about ten years back.

these days every year bits get upgraded, not in software (that's usually bug fixes that happen alongside) but in physical hardware changes under the skin. To the driver all the buttons and features will look either identical or with an imperceptible change, but the capability may be transformed.

The change usually comes in after a factory re jig during the summer... on a BMW anything built after Jul is a fundamentally different car to the one built 2 months earlier... but the dealerships will try their damnedest to keep you in the dark and sell the old rubbish

For example

on a BMW apple car play came out about 3 years ago. it was a big cost option with a bi annual subscription, that changed to free (because so many other brands gave it away free). But your car only gets converted if the car's software is updated.

Then in Jul 2019 all cars get hardware changes that for the first time ever built in the hardware to support Android Auto. But the software wasn't ready, with the software finally coming out for new 2021 cars built from Jul 2020. In the USA owners slept outside dealerships waiting for the software release...

So if you drove out of the dealership in Jun 2019 you have an obsolete un-updatable car
If you bought one in Jun 2020 you won't have the right software
If you waited and ordered a 2021 car in August it should have been built with car play and android auto all working, but full of bugs

and from that number (not ending in 20-07-500) using the table in the link it shows since the factory swapped to new build cars in July they have ALREADY released 4 iterations of BUG FIXED SOFTWARE FOR THE ENTIRE CAR

they are as closed as Mercedes,

but there are far more people interested in improving / optimising and adding stuff on a BMW so lots of people leaking the data

most towns in the UK will have 10 to 20 coding merchants that are happy to attack a BMW, with all the software ever released for all models. Whereas its more like 5 across the whole of the UK online and able to do this type of work outside the Merc main dealership network

in fact its all gone mobile tastic on BMWs, code the RR reversing bongs on your 1 series inside the next 15 minutes if it takes your fancy. or an Alpina gearbox programme...

Sadly the way Mercedes built the cars, customising those kind of things will NEVER be available on a Mercedes.
