i once wrote to mercedes asking this question. i noticed that my dealer had given me a courtesy litre of castol magnatec 10w40. i know the cars leave with mobil 1 0w40 in them. so i asked if it was correct. you shouldnt mix different grades.

they replied with.....castrol is approved for use in mercedes cars...they totally failed to answer the question.

i contacted some delears for service by email, most obliged by estimating the price for service and also confirmed the oil in use. I chose a delaer that used mobil 1 0w40 and the price of the oil was in the service...which was around £150...in 2003. :)

that delear no longer exists. boo.

give them a call. they should tell you....

Mobil do a 5w40 synthetic oil but as far as i can see it isnt open to public retail. I belive it was made to supply dealers who service cars like subarus. Merc dealers can get it.

They latest Ford Zetec engines are meant to filled with 5w30 for some reason. (that was from the Mobil 1 website).

Uncle Slinky !! Another mention of Ford cars :)

Ford have been recommending 5W 30 fully synthetic for some time in most petrol applications, not the Cougar V6 for some reason. I was suprised when we bought the SLK that the recommendation was 10W40 and semi synthetic at our local dealer.

I dont know enough about oils / engine design to suggest why the difference, but I think that ford went for thinner oils to help deal with tappet noise on startup, but they have gone back to solid tappets anyway now.

Mark.

I use Chevron 5W-40W fully-synth with no adverse effects. Prior to going fully synth, I was on Valvoline semi-synth for about 3years and 50k, similarly no probs. As long as the oil meets the (secretive?) spec laid down by merc, it shouldn't matter who makes it(personal prefrerences and the power of advertising aside) This website put my mind at rest about a lot of oily things, someone else in the MBOA passed it onto me.

All approved MB oils carry the MB codes on the back (228, 229 etc).

With regards to the correct oil for your car, let me know the model and I'll look it up on my database.

Cheers

When I was in Calais the other day I went to one of the hypermarkets where there happened to be a special offer on 6 litres of Mobil 1 Fully synthetic diesel oil and petrol engine oil for.... dare I say it ....... £26!

So guess who bought 30 litres of it!

Bought petrol engine oil as well for my American vehicles. Well chuffed! :D

It probably specifies a 15w-40 in the handbook but I would use a 10w-40 semi-synthetic which will give better cold start protection.

Cheers
