As much as I love the smell of petrol, my car really stinks of it round the back.

I can't see any bits where it's damp under the car on the driveway, and it's not really loosing fuel.

 Any ideas?

I haven't noticed it before, but it's been there for about 2 weeks now? Could I have a small petrol leak?

I've also noticed a problem with damp in the boot... Above the wheel arches, have I got serious problems now!?

If you look around the fuel tank, leaks will be seen as a dark patch, on your car do check where the filler pipe joins to the tank, they are known to leak there, if it all looks ok follow th fuel pipe (offside) from rear wheel to under the bonnet, once again any dark damp areas are a leak, just wipe it with your finger and smell. Other than that open the bonnet turn on ignition and lock/smell around the nearside of engine.

Faulty carbon canister? They're used to vent the fuel tank, the filter inside them blocks the smell. They get old and fail with time.

As Malc has said the common place for leaks is where the filler joins the tank. Right behind the O/S rear wheel and in the direct line of fire. Also it goes into the tank at the bottom so it doesn't matter how little fuel you have it will always leak. Pity you're so far away, I've got a good spare tank.
As regards your damp......if you get a mirror and torch and look up into and above the wheel arches where the seam is between the inner and outer wings you will probably see a mass of rust. This is the flange upstand at the lower front corner of the estate window (called 'cargo' by Merc). It's a very common place for rust to start and is the source of water ingress that starts the rear wheel arch flanges rusting from the inside. The trims and windows have to be removed to effect a decent repair. One of these jobs that's worse thinking about than actually doing.

I was also thinking carbon canister, especially with that mileage. I know 140s & 129s used to be behind the NSF wing repeator area but I've never changed a 124. Is it in the same place??

Sorry took me so long to have a look, I can't seem to see anything. Like any rust. Nothing on the floor, it's around the filler cap and under the rear wheel where the smell is coming from...

Now I duno if this is safe to drive long distance... ?

Just don't do what my mate did once to find a gas leak in his kitchen - use a lighter!
