So... My mate has a 2017 e220d estate. And over the last few months he's having to top up the oil. He's saying that the oil is going down by a 3rd every 3 months.
Now is that normal? I doubt it but... Does anyone know of any common issues with this car with regards to oil loss?

Depends on the miles covered in those 3 months buddy

My W213 E200d used a bit of oil between services, never enough to require topping up (it was a company car and I’d have had to pay for that…)

Hold on,

Is that 1/3 of the min to max level on the dipstick,

1/3 of the entire dipstick

1/3 of the entire sump volume to max.

has your mate's driving pattern changed, has (s)he inspected for leaks, removed undertray etc.

‘High oil consumption‘ is a difficult conversation to have with the dealers their yardstick tends to be that providing the engine doesn’t use more than a litre per 1000 miles that’s acceptable. I’ve known VW engines consume a litre in 500 miles and the dealer still argue that that’s acceptable which wouldn’t be in my book. My son’s OM654 seems to be developing a taste for oil he tops up 1 litre between services, his car is on 50k miles so it will be interesting to see if it starts to consume more it does see a lot of high temperature running on motorways

My mate isn't exactly mercedes tech inspired so to speak. Doesn't know anything about cars or even cares about them. He checks on the dash computer and does roughly 10k a year. Had it 6 months and the oil light came on twice on 6 months.

There isn’t a dipstick on a W213 (well perhaps one behind the wheel...:rolleyes:)
The dash flashes up if it needs some and it shows you a bar graph of the level

Has he checked for any dark patches on the road/driveway under the car after it’s been parked awhile?

Has this just started happening or has he had the car from new and it’s always done it ?

So 10,000 miles - how much does he put in each time?
If it's under 2L that's 5000 miles per litre so perfectly acceptable.

He said in average he's putting in 1L every 2000 miles? Is that acceptable LK?

Acceptable for the engine manufacturers from a liability pov, not in the real word.
