ASR / ABS light on and roof failure on SLK230

OK folks, had some input 2 weeks back and have since taken the car into a specialist MB dealer, it goes back tomorrow for another days diagnosis, but would like to take some info along to help them.

Car : 1998 SLK 230

Symptom/ Problem(s) : ASR and ABS light on permanently

Roof also won't retract since this occurred (fine before and I am fully familiar with the usual quirky roof faults and am pretty convinced this is connected, I've had the car 6 years so know the normal sticking faults etc, this is deffo different)

What I have done so far : I did the full wheel lock to both sides & restart = no good.

disconnected battery & left for 10 mins = no good

replaced the battery = no good (needed a new battery anyway, don't worry folks, I'm not losing it, but thought I would mention this point anyway).

Now then, on Tuesday the garage said they managed to pull up a wheel sensor fault??? but could not clear this to replicate the fault ... I am taking it back tomorrow, so any ideas folks, please ??????

I know the roof control module takes a signal from the rpm sensors but cant see it being that!

I think on the SLK with the ASR and ABS lights on the roof wont fold for safety reasons.

Your faults all come down to a speed sensor

The brake light switch can cause this code 1025

answering everyone in kind of order:

1. personally I agree & reckon the ASR and ABS fail would stop the roof folding for safety reasons, so I concur (this is an assumption borne out by common sense rather than actual knowledge, but as I say, the fault manifested itself the same day)
2. I was hoping they would change the brake light switch as a 'starter for 10' (as this is almost literally a £10 part so you would hope they would just do this first .... I'll let you know)
3. at least they have the wheel sensor pegged, but they are waffling on around 'checking wiring' as they 'can't get it to reset' to recheck this so question, is this part worth a punt on a straight swap? ie: I don't mind spending some money to eliminate faults ... would YOU tell them to crack on and replace the brake light switch and the sensor before spending hours buggering around?

thanks to all so far !

cheers

You say they cant clear the fault, what system are they using? if star, is the fault code current, i,e lite up in black, or is it a different fault code reader??

You can replace the switch in 10 mins and is the most common fault

dunno bud, they are an MB 'specialist' in Grimsby who are mainly ex-MB technicians, heavily used in the area by all and sundry and have always serviced my Benz's for years with no problem, but they worry me a little bit when it comes to good old fashioned diagnosis ..... I have no idea what diag system they use ... I suspect it'll be pukka, but will ask to be sure ...... I guess Star is the MB approved product?

I've never had issues before hence why I'm a tad green to the terminology / kit and systems

cheers !!

Some "cheaper" fault code reader cant clear or see live data like star can, thats the reason for asking!

what about the wheel sensor? time & cost approx?, as if they are both sub £50 parts I would rather just get this over with & fitted before they spend hours scratching their heads & butts ....... they might think they are doing me a favour by going steady, but could waste hours chasing their tails ....... :???:

Well a wheel sensor is the way to spin a job out, if there was any thing wrong there,I have never seen both the sensor and the switch go at the same time

Sorted

sure enough it was a totally US wheel speed sensor, right hand front. They replaced the sensor and it all reset fine (inc fault codes) and the roof now works fine too .......

£120 inc vat. Not bad seeing as they had the car nearly 2 days on and off and this includes parts and labour ..... <phew>

cheers to all on here too !

right then, I have this odd rattly noise when my A170 idles, especially when really cold, clears when over 900 rpm, so, multi-belt tensioner? I know, I know, wrong thread ........ :D

aaahhh, one thing they discovered ......

A good result,so pleased :D:D:D:D

one thing I forgot to mention yesterday, when they connected up the new sensor, the car somehow closed itself up (ie: the windows closed up and it also locked itself), thus locking the key inside !!! my wife had to drive over to them (25 miles) to open it up for them with the spare .... pure comedy !
