The ASR light has come on the dash of my 1998 SLK230(Not the traction control triangle but the actual text ASR), it comes on at all times wither i am driving or not. I took the car to a Mercedes specialist who rigged it up to the computer and the fault came back as the "stop brake switch".

He is quoting me £100 to fix the problem? Is this reasonable? The reason i am questioning this is because he quoted me £480 to get new pads & disks on the car.

The stop brake switch (subject of hundreds of posts as they commonly fail) on my C43 cost me £9.07 plus some pounds to fit as part of a service.

Your dealer's taking the micky out of you.

Thanks 996, i kind of thought it seemed a bit too steep. Do you think that this is the fault?

When mine went the ASR/BAS and ESP lights came on from time to time getting more and more often but with no obvious pattern. If you do a search through the forums you will find (literally) hundreds of posts about this.

It could be other things like wheel sensors and... and other things, but your dealer has told you it is the stop signal so I'd be inclined to go with that. It really is very common.

Unfortunately I didn't do it myself so can't talk you through it but I know it's pretty simple. If it isn't that then at least you have a spare stop brake switch for when it does fail!

My indie did mine on the E class - from memory it was £20 or so fitted.
Look up to the top of your brake pedal and you will see the switch. It will either unclip or unscrew, change over and pop the plug back on - job done. I suspect your dealer would charge £100, but an indie should know better.

Just off the Phone to my local Reg Vardy (Mercedes), they have also said the part costs £9.36, the independant dealer i WAS going to use was a company called "Merparts,(Mercedes Specialists) who quoted £100 after taking £53 for using the diagnostics machine, What a bunch of T***ers!

Thanks allot guys, i really appreciate your advice.
