Hello all, sorry for my inexperience but I'm posting from England on behalf of my father who is lives Tenerife about a car that I have never seen but which he is having serious problems with - any help would be very greatly appreciated!
I've seen a few postings about ASR warning lights but none that seem to adress our specific model and neither of us knows enough to say which information is common between different models:
My dad's car is 91/93 s-class mercedes saloon (600SL I think) he says it's a 140 chasis and an m120 v12 engine (I hope these are meaningful). He has been experiencing an increasingly frequent occurance of the ASR warning light with an attendant loss of power. The ASR is now on from cold for about 45mins until the car is warmed up, then he can cycle the ignition and get about 5mins with the ASR off and full power before the ASR comes back on again. The power loss during ASR does not seem to be as severe as others have described on their cars (I don't know if this a model specific thing or if it might give someone a hint as to what our problem is).
I saw one post that had the same problem on the v12 model after the one my dad has (the 94... one) and his problem was due to the wiring between the throttle body actuator and the controller disintigrating so I've asked my dad to check that but it seems fine (he is technically competent but not knowledgeable in mercedes servicing matters).
The situation has gradually deteriorated over time but now seems to have stabilised at this level of functionality. He's taken it the the local mercedes dealership on the island, they have apparently run a diagnostic and said he needs a new "throttle body" part num. 0001413925 but this is very expensive - a good proportion of the value of the car.
I don't have the error codes but it's possible that he could return to the dealership and get the exact codes (assuming they were some) if it would help to clarify the situation.
We are wondering if anyone out there has experience of dealing with this problem on this particular model and what kinds of things we can check before having to bite the bullet and get a replacement throttle body?
If we do have to replace the throttle body (part num. 0001413925), there seems to be some kind of market for reconditioned units but I was wondering what kind of money we should be looking at paying and if anyone knows of any companies that they would recommend as providing good service (providing this doesn't breach the non-trading rules of the forum?).
We are operating pretty much in the dark here because the car is in Tenerife and neither of us (especially myself) is knowledgeable in these things. My dad is bonkers about mercedes and it very upset at the state his car has end up in.
Does anyone out there know anything that might help to put things right?
Many thanks,
Karl.
