Can someone explain to me why a change of ATF is so expensive? I was quoted £200 by MB and £150 by a specialist. Is it the fluid? because surely it cant be the labour, doesn't it just involve jacking the car up undoing a bolt, draining the fluid and then pouring in some more? Can someone break it down for me? My local guy that I have used before said he would do it for around £20 or £30! (it's on a CLK W209 220D)

For the 7g box the sump has to come off and they take 9½ litres all filled from the bottom. it takes a bit of time to do the job as well.

Raise the car
Remove under trays
Remove drain plug
Remove sump and clean
Remove filter, replace with new filter
Refit sump with new seal
Refill with ATF
Run car to bring ATF to 80c
Check level, adjust

A diligent independent would also clean up the sump bolts and drain the torque converter
It all takes time to do properly..

Lets not forget that while the car is up on the ramps draining out the ATF, the ramps are not able to earn money on another job.

Cost of oil parts and labour time. I charge £155 inc vat which i think is totally reasonable.

How much do you think you should pay?

I'm not a mechanic or an expert so that is why I was asking why it costs so much. How much is the fluid and can I buy it myself? what is it called?

On one of the two forums there is a pictorial how to of Olly at PCS doing the job.
If you look at that you will see it isn't that simple and that an Indy at £150/200 isn't unreasonable. The fluids and filter make up a good chunk of that cost

I doubt for 20/30 that he will be cleaning the box pan and casting an experienced eye over the debris
