Anyone seen any really cheap Mercs at auction recently??

A few months back when i first really started exploring the idea of buying a Merc, im sure all the decent sub-80k E-class diesels that i was looking at were over £10k.

Well, was thumbing through the Sunday Mirror at the in-laws today and im sure Quentin Wilson was reporting seeing a 53 plate E280cdi for £7.7k. Not a mega-miler either.

I will check next time i go there - as i was still in shock after seeing a BMW X3 2.0 with 68k for £8600!!

Prices cannot stay at these levels, the new cars coming in must soon rise owing to the Euro 30% down

Given that the E280cdi didn't hit the roads until Nov 55/06 plate, that is REALLY impressive ;-)
Auctions are always a great place for a good deal - I've bought 2 cars from them over the years. One - an Astra in decent nick for £2000 less than the forecourts were asking for tatty examples. In the 4 years I had it I put an exhaust and some tyres on it.

The other, a Ford Granada. Again in decent nick, running lovely and again well over £1500 - £2000 cheaper than battered forecourt examples (I wasn't in main dealer territory for either as I was a poor student). The Granada turned out to be a thrown back together lemon that threw a con rod 6 weeks later and always had a shake at speed. I got away with it as I had a friend in the ford dealership but it was a close thing.

There are lots of great motors at the auctions but aways ask yourself why its there. Is it just over stock or was there another reason the dealer didn't put it on their forecourt or job it to one of their traders.....valeo for example .....

I was 'thumbing' through eBay yesterday and was very surprised to see how prices have dipped on there too...

It's a buyers market for sure.
