Hi, I am buying a W209 CLK55AMG 2003/53 on Friday, which currently has an Audio10 cassette deck (with a CD changer in the glove box and a Bose sub in the rear shelf). As cassettes went out with the ark (what was a new car doing with these in 2003???) I would prefer to fit an Audio10 CD player. Several for sale on ebay - no problem I thought.

However, I am confused as some people say the player will need to be activated by a dealer. Others say the security code is included. One regular dealer says his units have been programmed to no longer need a code.

Does anyone know the truth? I have searched the previous threads and most people seem to say that a 5 digit code is required (as it was with the Becker Monza I bought for our old C43). I don't fancy buying a player with no code provided if that's the case!

Ta for any thoughts!

You will have to draw your own conclusion re those without a code.

A friend gave me his old Audio 10, but had lost the code. this firm http://shop.ebay.co.uk/merchant/dave_dnd_W0QQQ5ftrksidZp3911Q2ec0Q2em1QQ_ssovZ1?_rkw=mercedes were great, I had a code within 15 mins.

I have a cassette head unit + 6 cd changer, have not found the lack of CD in the car a problem.

The older CD10's came with a code on a credit card bit of paper which fits in the owners manual. The newer ones don't have a code & I believe they are coded to the car.

... which means that unless I buy the code-free unit from the corporate supplier, I will have to go to the dealer (or specialist?) to get any unit matched to my car? Think I may have to check that out... I have read a post on here where someone put in an Audio30 which worked without coding, so perhaps that too had been rendered 'code free'.

I'm not about to buy something hookey anyway! Manuals, keys and everything please!

if you have the number on the side of the unit i belive part dept at the dealers can get the code for you, just to add your need to recode the MOST ring settings to be able to talk to the cd changer etc!!! unless your lucky and all the units and ring have been set the same in other cars!

I am just learing about this car (don't even have it yet - 4pm this afternoon!:D ) but I thought I read that my age of W209 doesn't have MOST - came in with the 2005 facelift I thought...

Ah! I thought it was a DB2 ring. Think I'll ask Alfie for a quote for Comand - now we have the car, the sound quality from the Audio 10 isn't brilliant anyway. The Audi Concert in our A2 is better - not withstanding the extra bass from the Bose unit in the back of the CLK.
