Chaps,
I'm having problems with the 'Audio 20 CD/Radio' on my 53 plate, W211 e-class. Every so often, all sound will stop and 'MUTED' will appear on the display. This is different to the 'MUTE' message displayed when you hit the mute button. Sometimes the problem will clear itself whilst driving, and sometimes after I switch of the engine and come back to the car a couple of hours later. There seems to be no pattern to this random avent.
Has anyone else come accross this problem, and can anyone tell me how to fix it?:confused::confused:

Do you have phone pre-wire? Perhaps there is a fault with the connections and the audio unit thinks there is s phone call coming in and mutes the cd/radio?

If it's anything like the Audio10 you might be receiving traffic broadcasts etc. You can disable the traffic broadcasts on the Audio10 by pressing and holding the mute button I think. Someone else with an Audio20 may be able to confirm if it is the same or similar procedure for the Audio20.

Hope you manage to fix it!

Chris.

It sounds to me like it had an after market phone kit installed at one point and when they removed it, the mute lead wasn't taped up properly. Normally the stereo mutes when the lead is earthed so if it's flopping about somewhere, touching the bodywork it will do this.

Thanks chaps,
It did have a phone fitted, but i cut the cable and tucked it under the central consol (the cradle would only take a very old 'brick' of a phone that would have cost me too much to buy). But i did this more than 11 months ago, and this intermitent problem is only starting to happen.
Its almost consistent with the 'If your audio 20 overheats, it will mute itself' speal; but sometimes it would be muted first thing in the morning when its frosty?
Any other suggestions, or is it an expensive trip to my local?

There is nothing listed in the faults list on this, if you cut the phone lead are any stray ends touching on the wires

No, i checked today.
I'm totally stumped. I still believe that the unit thinks its overheating and shuts off.

Though nothing listed, with time permitting on Sunday I will try and get the pin outs, to see if any external source could influence it into mute.

I always give these things a thump, to check for intermittent faults, we have to to make sure that they will be ok in a car

I have noticed mine doing the same........ but only after the sun has been at it, so perhaps the black fascia is not a good thing, maybe it kids the unit it is overheating..... just a guess you know!

My Audio 20 sometimes stops, but it does not show 'Mute' in the display, all I do is press the radio station preset button (1 in my case) and all is restored. I suppose this happens about once or twice a week and although it is a nuisence I have learnt to live with it. I have a bluetooth HFP cradle attached to mine so I am assuming that it might just be a spurious incoming call signal from that which causes the Audio 20 to mute the music. No other problems so far.

Muting faults are the hardest to find, due often to their intermittent nature. If it comes back after pressing the raio button I do not think that the fault is internal in the Comand
