work the cd changer in the boot. 2 types, elctronic control, or fibre optic control. In theory, you could fool the electronic type into thinking whatever you have is a cd changer, by piggy-backing into the correct input connections. I don't think you can do it with the fibre optic type though.

The car doesn't have a CD changer anywhere..

right - think its going to get replaced then - nothing there I can easily connect to. I'll just swop it out. Any preferred head units people use?

Wel thats what the ad said to be honest but I think the old boy was confused. All I have is a 6 CD storage thing, the type you put a CD in and the little plastic element goes orange to tell you there is a CD in there, but its only storage not a player of any type. This makes me wonder why its there. Its a proper fitted thing, not just chucked in.
I'll get some pics

sounds more like its the cd changer but perhaps the car doesnt know its there. possibly retrofitted and never programmed to the car ie not done by an MB dealer or specialist

That is odd having the CD storage unit and no CD player,,it fits to one side of the CD holder in the glove box when fitted

the left hand side of the glove bax space next to this storage bin.. is empty..
I am trying to figure out how to remove the storage bin part as its pointless and would give me more space in there - but it seems secured somehow..

i would say someone has changed the radio at some point and just stuck the cassette in to get them by changing that radio is not straight forward either because you a facia adaptor because the radio is not din size you will need to pick up a ign off the lighter but if you are seroius about doing it have a look at the sony bt units they are fairly cheap and do mp3 bluetooth, and have a aux socket on the front for ipod

i changed my blaupunkt one for a jvc radio cassette with 12 disc cd changer in the boot. only thing that makes it look out of place is that when its on it illuminates green, not the usual orangey yellow colour.

turbopete - On most JVCs that I've worked on the illumination colour is changable via the menu system and orange is one of the options. Have a look in the manual or press and hold 'menu' and see what options you have.
